Vesta

Vesta by Roy MacKinnon Vesta was the fourth of the large asteroids to be discovered. It was the 29th March 1807 when astronomer Heinrich Olbers, made the discovery. Vesta has little eccentricity of orbit and travels within that of Ceres, accomplishing one solar revolution in 3.6 years. At an aphelion of only 2.5AU, this is within the 3:1 Kirkwood Gap, which is one of a series of gaps created by resonance with massive Jupiter. Vesta also rotates rapidly on its axis, once in about 5 hours but at an curiously oblique angle - the tilt is nearly 30 degrees. Vesta is the brightest of the asteroids having a very high albedo and is the only object, with the possible exception of Uranus occasionally, which can sometimes be seen in clean mountain air without the use of a telescope. Vesta is somewhat egg-shaped, mainly caused by the large impact crater at its South Pole. Vesta is remarably dense and would surprisingly appear to have an iron-nickel core with a silicate mantle and there is evidence of basaltic lava extrusions. Some meteorites, which have fallen to Earth are thought to have come from Vesta. The density is an amazing 3.4gms/cc and it is the second largest of the asteroids. NASA's Dawn Probe, launched in 2007 will arrive in a few years at Vesta to explore it prior to moving on to Ceres. In Roman mythology, Vesta was a goddess of the hearth, home and family. Her presence was symbolised by the sacred fire, the focus of attention of the Vestal Virgins. These women could not marry and their sexual acivity was considered sacred. Some early Roman kings were born as progeny of these virgins. These women were given enormous privileges in society and the flame was said to be eternal. In astrology, Vesta symbolises devotion, single-mindedness and focus. It may also represent sexual complexes and in good aspect can indicate natural resonant friendship. If Saturn is in trine to Vesta then the individual may possess the ability to realise goals through hard work and dedication, may be serious-minded and possess self-discipline and a determined single- minded approach to responsibilities. Where Vesta is in square to Saturn however, then the person may experience conflict between personal needs and responsibilities to others. This can lead to either avoidance of commitment to responsibility, possibly through setting perfection. Workaholism, excessive ambition and sexual fears can result. Albert Schweitzer had Vesta in the 8th House of power, life, death and transformation, where the natural ruler is Pluto. His Vesta was in trine to the Sun in the 4th House in Capricorn - and he created his astonishing hospital in the jungle in the most difficult of conditions.
