UK Summer of Strike Actions 16 June 2011
By Vanessa BarfordBBC NewsAre we facing a summer of discontent?The papers are awash with warnings of a "summer of discontent" due to public sector strike action over pension changes, job cuts and pay freezes. But how bad is it?Suddenly strike action is back in the headlines, threatening to bring doom and gloom to British summertime.A 24-hour co-ordinated strike - due to be staged on 30 June - is now definitely on the cards.The PCS union - whose 300,000 members include court and job centre staff, border, customs and immigration officers, air traffic controllers and police support staff - has voted in favour of a walkout.
They will be joined by two teachers' unions - the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, which have a combined total of about 450,000 members - which have decided to take action at thousands of schools in England and Wales on the same day.ATL president, Andy Brown, announced the union's first national strike with "deep reluctance".Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude accused unions of "jumping the gun".Following the ballot result on Tuesday backing strike action, the leaderships of the two unions confirmed plans for a one-day strike this month.The teachers' unions are campaigning against changes to their pensions which they say will mean working longer, paying more and getting less when they retire. NUT leader Christine Blower said that "teachers do not take strike action lightly" but accused the government of trying to "ride roughshod over them" in changes to their pensions.The date set for the strike, the ATL president Andy Brown says, has been picked to "avoid external exams and important school and college events so that any strike causes as little disruption as possible to children's education". "We do not want to strike, but unless we take a stand now the government will irreparably damage education in this country and children will lose out."
In order to see what is going on for the country on the 30 June 2011, I have combined the two charts. The UK chart is the inner wheel, the proposed strike chart is the outer wheel.We can see that Saturn is at 10-41' degrees Libra, just past the UK Ascendant but square the Sun at 10-10' Capricorn. This is a depressing influence and a testing time for the government when it will be confronted with many problems. Transiting Pluto is retrograde at 6 degrees Capricorn. It has been 'hovering' around the UK's 4th house cusp for some time, undermining the foundations of the country and setting the stage for major transformative changes to take place as it slowly moves towards a conjunction with the UK Sun. At the same time, transiting Uranus 4-31' degrees Aries has been opposing its own position in the natal chart. This is a time of change, of rebelling against that which restricts. But the danger is that impulsive actions may lead to changes that cannot easily be made good. They need to be carefully thought out before action is taken as Uranus is also on the Jupiter/Chiron midpoint, which could indicate a lot of pain and suffering. The Transiting Neptune/Chiron midpoint is conjunct the UK Pluto in Pisces and is a perfect description of what is happening on the economic front at the moment: the dire state of the UK finances is causing hardship and sacrifice for its people.
