back to basic astrology TRANSITS by Liz Seddon A transit occurs when a planet in its orbit forms an aspect to any planet or point in the natal chart. Whenever a transiting planet passes through a particular house in the natal chart, that house is being activated. To find out the transits of any given time, look up the date in question in the ephemeris ( a special book that lists all the positions of the planets for any given day for the next 50 years or more) and compare their positions to the planets in the natal chart. Traditionally, the difficult transits are the conjunctions, squares and oppositions. The easy transits are the trines, sextiles and some conjunctions where the planets in question are compatible. However, transits can be made more difficult when they 'echo' an aspect in the natal chart or set one off by becoming a conductor. You should also look at planets that are making aspects to each other in the sky on any given day for these can create difficulties on a global level. Saturn/Pluto aspects are particularly known to do this. The most important transits are the ones from the outer planets. Transits from these planets usually indicate major developements. The effects of the transits would depend on the planet in question. For instance: Jupiter transits are times of expansion, either positive or negative. Saturn transits can be quite difficult and can last about 9 months. It's a time for taking on responsibilities, lessons to be learned and can be a restrictive and depressing influence. Uranus transits can mean a time of unexpected change and disruption to the status quo. But it can also bring enlightenment. Its transits last about two years. Neptune transits indicate gradual loss of some kind. Its transits can bring confusion, deception and dissolution into our life. It's a time to take care when taking drugs of any kind as their adverse effect is more likely with Neptune transits. However, it can also be a period of healing and compassion. Neptune's influence lasts 2 years. Pluto transits bring transformation of some kind, often through a deep and painful loss. Powerstruggles and obsessions are likely during this period, which lasts 2-3 years. Chiron transits indicate a deep wound and shock, either emotional or physical, which is followed by new a understanding. Enlightenment may bring about the ability to help heal others. Its transits last about 10 months.
