The Planets

basic astrology The Planets by Liz Seddon Each planet in the natal chart indicates an energy that influences the individual in its own way. What effect it has depends on the various aspects to other points and planets and the House it is in. The Sun rules Leo and symbolises how we go about expressing our Self according to the manner of the sign it is in. I.e. in Leo it likes to be noticed and in charge, whereas in Pisces it may express itself by being artistic in some way. It is also an indicator of how we experienced our Father as he represents the solar energy. The Moon rules Cancer and indicates how we instinctively react in any given situation. Thus a watery moon may become emotional and cry when things go wrong but the moon in an air sign may react by standing back and thinking about how to solve the problem. The Moon is also an indicator of how our early mothering was experienced. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, is the planet of communication, learning, siblings and all local travel. The sign it is in and the aspects to it show the manner in which we are able to take in and give out information and how we relate to our siblings and neighbours. Thus, Mercury in Aquarius is interested in learning and communicating all things that are of an unusual nature whereas Mercury in Capricorn would be a serious student and communicate in a controlled manner. Venus, the planet of love and affection and all that we value, rules Taurus and Libra. It is an indicator of how we attract as well as what attracts us to another person. It also indicates our attitude toward money. So Venus in Cancer is likely to manifest as a love for the home and family, Venus in Sagittarius as a love of foreign travel and cultures. Mars rules Aries and shows what we want and how we go about getting it. Mars in Gemini may do so by taking in information and sharing that with others. Mars in Virgo is likely to put out energy in a practical manner, perhaps to do with health or nutrition. Jupiter, the Greater Benefic, ruler of Sagittarius indicates the area in which we are likely to be expansive. In Sagittarius it could indicate long-distance voyages or university education. In Libra, it could mean many fortunate relationships, depending on aspects. Saturn as ruler of Capricorn, is the opposite to Jupiter. Its energy restricts and makes us fearful. It makes us aware of what it is we need to take responsibility for. It is the Teacher, the Grim Reaper, 'as we sow so shall we reap'. It is an area in the chart where we are likely to come up against obstacles that will test us severely until the lessons are learned. However difficult these may be, the experiences can help strenghten our character . In Scorpio it is likely to make us aware of dificulties relating to sexual relationships, financial matters such as taxes or inheritances and insurance. In Aries it is likely to manifest as a lack of self-confidence. Uranus rules Aquarius and because it stays in any one sign for 7 years it is called a generational planet. Its house position and the aspects to other planets indicate in what area of life we need space in order to be able to express our own individuality. Neptune, ruler of Pisces stays in any one sign for 14 years and as such is also a generational planet. Its house position and the aspects to other points and planets in the chart show where we are likely to experience deception or disillusion or alternatively, artistic ability or great compassion. Pluto rules Scorpio and is another generational planet. It stays in any one sign between 10 and 30 years. Its house position and the aspects to other points and planets in the chart are likely to make us aware of issues relating to power/abuse of power and painful traumatic experiences, which we tend to keep hidden (even from ourselves).
