The Moon's Nodes

The Moon's Nodes by Liz Seddon The Sun appears to move around the Earth in a circular orbit known as the Ecliptic. During its circle around the Earth, the Moon crosses the path of the Sun once from South to North (the Ascending Node) and fourteen days later from North to South (the Descending Node). The Nodes' motion is usually retrograde so that they move backwards through the signs of the Zodiac. A complete retrograde cycle of the Nodes takes 19 years. They are always opposite each other and form a line called: 'The Nodal Axis' Astrologically, the Nodes represent where we have come from (South Node, previous lives) and where we are going (North Node, this life). The North Node is concerned with taking on new experiences, it symbolises challenge and growth. Its energy is likened to that of Jupiter. Its sign and house is where we feel unsure and awkward until we learn how to express its themes. The South Node represents skills and talents we have developed over past life times. Its sign and house is where we feel totally comfortable and experienced. Its where we can become teacher and role model to others and is very much likened to Saturn. How easy or difficult this is depends on the aspects to the Nodes. Harmonious aspects assist the energy of the Nodes while the disharmonious aspects indicate struggles and conflict. A planet conjunct the South Node indicates that we have taken on board the use of knowledge and talents from previous incarnations. But because this planet opposes the North Node we must first gain insight through the affairs of the sign and house of the North Node. Only then will the knowledge and talents of the conjuncting planet be allowed to flow freely from the memory banks of the subconscious. Planets conjunct the North Node unite their energies with that of the North Node in order to inspire or force us to work with the affairs of its sign and house. The opposition to the South Node activates resistance and crises from other people, causing stress in the life. Thus our efforts to return to familiar attitudes regarding the sign and house of the South Node are blocked, forcing us to the new and different experiences of the North Node's sign and house. Planets square the Nodes indicate conflict between the signs and the houses they are in. The need is to establish a balance between these two areas, the planetary power and the Nodes. Planets trine or sextile the Nodes seem to encourage and support the developement and change in the affairs of the Nodal signs and houses. Both energies can be used to assist growth. When the Nodes form major aspects to another person's planets, it may indicate close karmic ties. Harmonious aspects to the South Node indicate a drawing together for a mutually beneficial relationship. Harmonious aspects to the North Node indicate that the North Node's person's ideas can be beneficial because they challenge the other person's attitudes and responses. Disharmonious aspects to the Nodes will obviously have the opposite effect.
