The Houses

basic astrology The Astrological Houses by Liz Seddon The Houses are the 12 equal parts of 30 degrees making up the horoscope of 360 degrees. There are many more House systems but at the BSA we use the equal house system. Each House refers to its own area of responsibility. For instance, the Moon in the second House may feel secure (Moon) with a big bank balance (second House). All the natural Houses have their natural rulers, e.g. Aries = 1st House, ruler Mars. Taurus =2nd House, ruler Venus. Gemini=3rd House, ruler Mercury. etc.etc. 1st House -----------The self, the physical body . Ruler : Mars 2nd house -----------My possessions, what I value, money, affection. Ruler: Venus 3rd House -----------Siblings, communication and learning. Ruler: Mercury 4th House ---------- Home, mother, emotions, roots. Ruler: the Moon 5th House -----------Self-expression, children, hobbies, romance. Ruler: the Sun 6th House -----------Health, day-to-day activities, service to others. Ruler: Mercury 7th House -----------Partnerships, open enemies, one-two-one situations. Ruler: Venus 8th House -----------Death, taxes, inheritances, sex, joint finance. Ruler: Pluto 9th House -----------Philosophy, higher education, foreign travel, religion. Ruler: Jupiter 10th House ----------Career, standing in the world, father. Ruler: Saturn 11th House --------- Hopes and goals, groups, friendships. Ruler: Uranus 12th House ----------Self-sacrifice, seclusion, institutions. Ruler: Neptune However, not too many people start their horoscope with 0 degrees of Aries rising. The time and place of birth determine the cusp of the 1st House or Ascendant or Rising sign. The 2nd House cusp is 30 degrees from that, and so on. The Ascendant or Rising sign reflects the zodiac sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon at the moment of birth. This is why an exact time is so vital to finding an accurate rising sign. The ascendant is the physical self or the face one presents to the world. The Descendant is exactly opposite and marks the cusp of the 7th House. The I/C the cusp of the 4th House and the M/C, opposite, the cusp of the 10th House. Fire signs rising are: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius -- energetic, enthusiastic, optimistic. Outer manner friendly, good mixers. Earth signs rising are: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn -- practical, conventional,reliable. Concerned with structure and slow growth. Air signs rising: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius -- communicative, sociable, concerned with ideas. Friendly manner but detached. Water signs rising: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces -- emotional, psychic, protective of self and others. What you see is not always what you get.
