from: the mirror.co.uk A student who called himself the "Crossbow Cannibal" has been jailed for life for the "wicked and monstrous" murders of three women in Bradford. The judge at Leeds Crown Court told 40-year-old Stephen Griffiths he would spend the rest of his life in prison. As he stood handcuffed in the dock at Bradford Crown Court, Stephen Griffiths was asked to identify himself. "The crossbow cannibal", the 40-year-old student replied, to gasps from the public gallery. Griffiths' appearance came at the end of a week of intense police activity by detectives investigating the disappearance of Suzanne Blamires, Shelley Armitage and Susan Rushworth, who had all worked as prostitutes in the city. After his arrest, he told West Yorkshire Police: "I've killed loads." As the inquiry gathered pace, details about the man suspected of their murders emerged.Stephen Griffiths was a loner who was obsessed with mass murderers. The 40-year-old perpetual student sealed his place in the macabre history of killers when he appeared in court for the first time and was asked to give his name. His chilling "crossbow cannibal" reply referred to CCTV footage now in West Yorkshire Police's possession which showed his last victim, Suzanne Blamires, being shot in the head with a crossbow. In the footage, from a camera in the corridor at Griffith's block of flats, Miss Blamires is dragged away and a man later emerges carrying bin bags. The name he gave himself is also thought to be a reference to reports he may have tried to eat the flesh of some of his victims after chopping them up. His behaviour when he made his first court appearance shocked onlookers. But it also supported descriptions of Griffiths by those who knew him. He had spent six years working on a postgraduate thesis about serial killers and murderers. Griffiths was in born on Christmas Eve 1969 in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, to frozen food salesman Stephen Griffiths and his wife, Moira. He has a younger brother and sister. The family lived in the Thornhill area of Dewsbury but he moved to nearby Wakefield when his mother and father split up when he was young. Griffiths was said to be interested in martial arts as a schoolboy One Bradford man who used to play chess with Griffiths at their local bar said he was "really good" at the game. "He would tell you where you had gone wrong and still beat you," he said. The man, called Jacquesy, said Griffiths, who they nicknamed "Peanut", had seemed very intelligent. "He had an answer for every argument you had."Despite his modest background, Griffiths received part of his education at the town's prestigious fee-paying Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. He left school at the age of 16.In his late teens he was jailed for slashing a shop worker with a knife. He was assessed at Rampton high security hospital, which deemed he did not pose a risk to society. On his release from jail, Griffiths continued his education at Bradford College and went on to get a degree in psychology at Leeds University. At the time of his arrest he was studying for a PhD at the University of Bradford. His studies focused on patterns of crime in the city during the 19th Century. His chosen dissertation was entitled Homicide in Bradford 1847 - 1899.
Stephen Shaun Griffiths was born 24 December 1969, in Dewsbury, England. Time not known.When looking at the chart of Stephen Griffiths, the obsessive qualities are immediately apparent in the t-square with Chiron, Sun and Pluto/Uranus. It is likely that the Moon is also part of this configuration but not having his time of birth I can't include it. What it tells us either way is that there are deep-seated, painful issues within his psyche that have been suppressed and have found a negative way of expression in his off-beat, compulsive and obsessive behaviour. Pluto makes a trine aspect to Mercury indicating his interest in projects that are of a deep and serious nature. It also squares Venus, the planet of love and affection and is a likely indication of his need for control in his close relationships. Jupiter and Saturn make positive aspects to Mars and the Sun but are in opposition to each other, alternating between applied discipline in his work and studies and a lack of faith in his ability. It is not helped by the square from Neptune to Mars, which can be an indication of deep sexual anxieties.
In June 2009, when Susan Rushworth was last seen, tr Pluto was on Griffiths's Sun, activating his t-square. On 24th May 2010, the day he was arrested, transiting Saturn was at 27-52' degrees Virgo, conjunct his natal Pluto at 27-22' degrees Virgo: severely limiting his resources!
