The Composite Chart by Liz Seddon The composite chart is used when we want to find out what dynamic is being played out between people. This can be between a number of people but I use it mainly between two people in any kind of relationship. This can be husband/ wife, mother/daughter, employer/employee, doctor/patient, business partners, etc.etc. Sometimes, when you look at the synastry between people you wonder how they can possibly have a good relationship, but they do. You will find that this is due to the third entity in this relationship: The Composite Chart, which is a stand-alone chart of the relationship. The composite chart is created by finding the midpoint between pairs of planets and other sensitive points of the natal horoscopes. That is the Sun of one and the Sun of the other, the Moon of one and the Moon of the other, and so forth. The composite Sun is the midpoint of the Suns, the composite Moon is the midpoint of the Moons, etc.etc. How to cast a composite chart. 1. Take both charts and count all planets positions from 0 degrees Aries instead of 0 degrees of their sign. Then count from there to the position of the planet in the natal chart. So, from Aries =0 degrees, Taurus 30 degrees, Gemini 60 degrees, Cancer 90 degrees, Leo 120 degrees, Virgo 150 degrees, Libra 180 degrees, Scorpio 210 degrees, Sagittarius 240 degrees, Capricorn 240 degrees, Aquarius 300 degrees, Pisces 330 degrees. 2. Take the longitudes for each pair of planets - the two Suns, the two Moons etc. add them together and divide by two. For instance: person A has Sun at 20 degrees Aries, person B has Sun at 10 degrees Cancer. A=20, B=100, total 120, divide by two =60. 3. Convert back to sign notation. 60=0 degrees Gemini, which is the composite Sun. Do the same for all the other planets and points. 4. Check to see if steps 2 and 3 have given you the nearer or further midpoints (see midpoints). 5. Erect a chart with the composite planets on. 6. This chart is a stand-alone chart for this particular relationship. 7. Interpret it the same as you would any chart but remember this chart belongs to two people. 8. Compare the chart to each natal chart. You'll find that it ususally 'favours' one chart more than the other. 9. Look to see if transits are affecting the composite chart at any time as these may create difficulties, particularly if they coincide with other transits to the natal charts.
Above is the composite chart of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, whose natal charts you'll find on the synastry page. They have a Venus/Sun/Moon conjunction in the 2nd house normally associated with financial security. However, Neptune is opposing this from the 8th House and Uranus, ruler of the 2nd house in Pisces conjunct Jupiter and Mars in the 3rd house, says more about humanitarian values and a 'denial' of joint resources. It is likely to find expression in actively seeking and communicatingnew ideas for expansion. A need for freedom is important in this relationship. What else can you find?
