The Angles

The Angles by Liz Seddon The Ascendant is the sign that is on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth and indicates the 1st house cusp. Its opposite sign containing the degree which at the same moment is descending below the Western horizon is called the Descendant and indicates the 7th House cusp. The M/C or Mid-Heaven refers to the degree where the ecliptic reaches its highest point above the horizon. The exact opposite to the degree of the M/C is the lowest point below the horizon and is called the I/C. The Ascendant's tone is modified not only by the position of its ruling planet but also by any close aspect by any other planet. This planet always makes an impact and always affects the personality that is projected as well as the self-expression. Any such planet strongly colours the person's life.Conjunctions within 8 degrees are the most powerful aspects and the most immediately noticable qualities in the personality. Oppositions are the second most powerful. They are conjunct the Descendant and planets near it show qualities that especially emerge in relationships and may be very diferent from the person's image, such as may be gleaned from the Ascendant. Square aspects to the Ascendant are among the most frustrating or challenging of aspects with the Ascendant. From the 4th House they may symbolise pressures from the early environment manifesting as oppression or inhibition. As a pressure toward achievement or recognition when from the 10th House. But as with all challenging aspects they can show where the greatest effort toward growth may be. Any planet closely aspecting the Ascendant adds its quality to the personality. It is automatically at the person's disposal although one may have to learn to acknowledge or integrate it and can be a major source of energy when learned to tap into it. Even if the Sun and Moon make no close aspect to the Ascendant, it is still very important to understand how the elements of these three dominant factors blend with the individual. This will clarify how the essential energies of life flow together and to what extent the Ascendant encourages or restrains the expression of the Sun and Moon energies. Aspects to the Mid-Heaven. Planets in the 10th House, especially those that are conjunct the M/C represent ways of being and qualities and types of activity that are extremely important to the individual, and which he respects. Due to this feeling of respect, people will often exhibit these qualities or express these energies publicly in order that others might think well of them. Any planet in close aspect with the M/C indicates a type of energy that is essential in the achievement of one's position in the world and instrumental in what will be contributed to society. For instance, if Venus is closely aspecting the M/C, it is important to contribute something artistic or beautiful to society. One to one interactions are likely to be important to one's public self-image and one is likely to be concerned with making a pleasant contribution to society. In another example in the charts of three publishers, Jupiter is in close aspect to the M/C. One conjunction and two sextiles. Jupiter is the planet that rules publishing. Any planet opposite the M/C will be conjunct the I/C. This may be indicative of the problem one faces having to balance the home life with a career. Something a lot of working mothers today are very familiar with. Square aspects from either the 1st or 7th House indicate the problems one has to overcome integrating one's pesonality (1st) or one's relationship matters (7th) with one's career or standing in the world. In synastry, any personal planet in particular, in aspect to any of these points in the chart of another is significant.
