Stephen Hawking at 70

Stephen Hawking at 70 9 January 2012

Professor Stephen Hawking marked his 70th birthday yesterday.Professor Stephen Hawking was not well enough to attend an event to celebrate his 70th birthday at the University of Cambridge. He was due to look back at his life at the free public symposium at the University's Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, but instead had to make do with watching events unfold on the internet. All the tickets for the free event were snapped up months ago which is a testament to Prof Hawking's enduring appeal, but the university revealed he would not be attending the event soon after it began.Cambridge University tweeted: "Prof Hawking not well enough to attend today but is watching the live stream. Happy birthday Prof and get well soon! #Hawking70."

Speakers at the event included the Astronomer Royal Lord Rees, Prof Saul Perlmutter and one of the world's leading theoretical physicists, Prof Kip Thorne. Entitled The State of the Universe, the symposium is celebrating how Prof Hawking went on to become one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein. Given only two years to live when he was diagnosed with a form of motor neurone disease in 1963, Prof Hawking has defied medical expectation.Lord Rees spoke of his admiration for Prof Hawking before the event, commenting on his great feat of reaching the age of 70 after "tragedy struck" and he was diagnosed with a deadly illness. He said: "Even mere survival would have been a medical marvel, but of course he hasn't merely survived. He has become arguably the most famous scientist in the world - acclaimed for his brilliant researches, for his best-selling books, and, above all, for his astonishing triumph over adversity."Talking about how Prof Hawking has become such a cult figure, Lord Rees said that "the concept of an imprisoned mind roaming the cosmos plainly grabbed people's imagination". Stephen Hawking was born on 8 January 1942, Oxford, UK. Time unknown. The brilliance of Stephen Hawking can be gleaned from the Grand Trine in the Earth signs consisting of Mercury in Capricorn, Neptune in Virgo and a Saturn - Uranus conjunction in Taurus. These indicate a shrewd, organised and disciplined mind concerned with the attainment of status through unusual and scientific accomplishments. It suggests genius in some special area, capable of using his highly developed visualisation, which allows him to see objects or a process in complete detail. The Sun and the Moon are also involved here and suggest that these have become his life's work, carried out with dignity and responsibility. His lack of mobility and independence can be attributed to the very close square of Mercury to Mars in Aries and Saturn on his Mars/Jupiter midpoint, which also squares Venus in Aquarius, adding to the restriction and limitation. The square from Uranus to Venus is an indication of restlessness but the trine to Jupiter in Gemini suggests his ability to communicate and teach in an unusual way as well as his positivity to keep going under the most difficult circumstances.

The Centaur Pholus is at 18-22' degrees of Capricorn, closely conjunct his Sun. In astrological terms Pholus is the mediator between Saturn and Neptune but with a Uranian flavour to it. Pholus is also very knowledgeable but his is a more inspirational kind of knowledge. He also has a mediumistic quality, a connection to ‘the other world’ and the ability to get in touch with that world. Toxic situations and victimhood are a couple of keywords for Pholus. Both of these apply to Stephen Hawking. As does the word 'legacy'. His theories of Black holes, Theoretical cosmology, Quantum gravity and Hawking radiation as well as his books on the subjects will be left as his legacy for future generations. L.S.
