The Solar Return Chart What is a Solar Return Chart? A Solar Return Chart is a chart erected for the time that the transiting Sun returns to the exact position of the natal Sun. Once every year the transiting Sun goes through the entire Zodiac. Every degree, minute and second of each sign. When you are born, the Sun in your natal chart has a specific position in the zodiac. At some point in time during each subsequent year, the transiting Sun returns to its natal position, conjuncting the natal Sun. The date and time when the conjunction occurs, down to the exact second of arc, is the time set for the Solar Return chart. A chart is then calculated for that date, using the time of the transiting Sun's position and the location (latitude and longitude) at the time of the conjunction. This chart is valid until the next Solar Return date. Interpretations are very similar to natal interpretations. However, the emphasis is on the Sun, its position by house and the aspects it makes to other planets. For instance if the Solar return Sun is in the 12th House, the person may feel like hiding away. If, however, the Solar Sun is in the 5th House then the person is likely to be creative during that year. Aspects to the Sun will add more information. The significance of the Solar Return runs from birthday to birthday, with a three-month overlap at the beginning and end of each year. Many times there is an event at exactly three months before the birthday that triggers awareness and signals the start of the new Solar Return. On the other hand, the significance of the old Solar Return may not feel passed until three months after the birthday. The old themes and issues that have been felt during the year will start to lose their importance just as the new Solar Return starts to manifest itself. It is important to remember that Solar returns are part of a cumulative process. The more attentive and productive you are this year, the greater your options next year. The greater the difference between the old and the new or the natal chart, the greater the difficulty in adjusting to the new issues and the more unsettled the transitional period before the birthday is. One can calculate a Lunar Return chart in exactly the same way as the Solar return chart, but it lasts only for the month in question as the Moon transits all 12 signs in 28 days. The house the Moon is in is significant as are the major aspects, particularly if aspecting the natal chart.
On the left is the Solar Return chart for George W. Bush set for 5th July2008, 06.42.41 EDT +4hrs Wasington DC. 38N53 077W02 George's Solar Return Sun (remember it is always at the exact same degree as in the natal chart) is in the 12th House conjunct Venus close to the Ascendant. We know that George Bush is due to finish his presidential duties in January 2009, so it seems appropriate that the SR. Sun is in the 12th House of withdrawal or seclusion. As Venus is also here this could indicate that he may be able to find time to express himself by becoming more artistic perhaps. Or by spending more time with his family (Cancer). Both planets are opposed by Jupiter (6th) suggesting that this may be a period of growth and freedom in everyday affairs. SR Saturn conjunct SR Mars in the 2nd House, indicates that he is able to apply controlled and disciplined energy to create (Leo) whatever he values (2nd house). The trine to Pluto will give him the power and determination to accomplish whatever he sets his mind to do. However, Pluto is opposed by Mercury, which indicates that he may come up against opposition to his plans. This aspect echoes his natal Mercury/Pluto conjunction.
