In the chart of Sir Nicholas the T-square of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune stands out and indicates his generation's social responsibility and the need to take care of others. The humanitarian influence becomes more personalised when we see his Mars conjunct Chiron in Aquarius in trine with Pluto and Mercury. These aspects made it possible for him to put his thoroughly thought-out plans into action. The Sun and Moon in Taurus indicate his work in banking and subsequently as a stockbroker.At the start of the war transiting Saturn and Pluto were in perfect square to each other in the heavens, indicating the difficulties ahead. Sir Nicholas had his final Saturn return only a few months previous. This would have made him more aware of his duties and responsibilities to the society in which he lived. During the summer months of 1939 transiting Jupiter was hovering on the midpoint of his natal Uranus/Pluto, indicating the striving towards his goal of setting free these children who would otherwise have been put to death in the concentration camps . He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition for his work with the 'Kindertransporte'.
Before Christmas 1938, Winton was about to fly to Switzerland for a ski vacation when he decided to travel to Prague instead to help a friend who was involved in Jewish refugee work. There he singlehandledy established an organization to aid Jewish children from Czechoslovakia separated from their families by the Nazis. He set up office at a dining room table in his hotel in Wenceslas Square. In November 1938, the British House of Commons had approved a measure that would permit the entry of refugees younger than 17 years old into England if they had a place to stay and a warranty of 50 pounds sterling was deposited for a return ticket for their eventual return to their country of origin. Winton found homes for 669 children, many of whose parents perished in Auschwitz.Throughout the summer, he placed advertisements seeking families to take them in. The last group, which left Prague on 3 September 1939, was sent back because the Nazis had invaded Poland, marking the start of World War II. Winton kept his humanitarian exploits under wraps for many years until his wife Greta found a detailed scrapbook in the attic in 1988. The scrapbook contained lists of the children, including their parents' names, and the names and addresses of the families that took them in. After sending letters to these addresses, 80 of "Winton's children" were found in Britain. For fifty years most of the children did not know to whom they owed their lives. Today there are over 5,000 descendants of the Winton children around the world, including in the UK, Canada, Czech Republic and the United States.
Nicholas Winton was born to parents of German-Jewish origin. In 1907 the family moved from Germany to Hampstead, England, and changed its name from Wertheimer to Winton. In 1923, he transferred to Stowe School, which had just opened. He left without matriculating, attending night school while volunteering at the Military Bank. Some time later, he left for Hamburg where he began to work at Behrens Bank, and then for Wasserman Bank in Berlin. In 1931 he left for France where he worked for the Banque Nationale de Crédit in Paris and earned a banking qualification. After his return to London he worked as a stockbroker. (From Wikepedia)
Catching a steam train full of waving passengers pull out of Prague station on Tuesday, the Meisl brothers recalled the wartime journey that had changed their lives forever. Peter Meisl was evacuated from Czechoslovakia by a British stockbroker, Nicholas Winton, on the eve of the Second World War along with 668 other children, 22 of whom were on board the commemorative train yesterday as it left Prague in a cloud of steam to begin its four-day trip to London. It arrived there today and was greeted by Sir Nicholas Winton himself,now in his 101st year.
