sednaSEDNA by Roy MacKinnon Our knowledge of the solar system has changed enormously in the last three decades. Until 1977 the system comprised the planets extending as far out as tiny Pluto and a band of asteroids mostly to be found inhabiting a region between Mars and Jupiter. In 1977, this all started to change because in that year Pluto was discovered to have a moon, Charon. Also, a curious tiny body called Chiron was found to be orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Then in the 1990s, with the advent of quality telescopes including Hubble, the whole picture of the solar system changed dramatically. Whereas the only solar system category beyond Pluto was considered to be the long period comets, very quickly it became known that there was a ring of asteroids which orbited beyond Neptune, many of them even further away than Pluto. This remote series of asteroids mostly between 35 and 55 astronomical units have come to be known as the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt. (One astronomical unit is 93.000.000 miles, which is the distance from the Earth to the Sun). 2003 VB12 or Sedna takes a mind-boggling 10.772 years to orbit the Sun. When it is closest to the Sun (perihelion) it is still a distant 76a.u. - more distant at its closest than any other object but when it is furthest away from the Sun (aphelion) it is an incredible 899 a.u. It is quite literally at the very edges of the solar system. Sedna has a reddish colour, nearly as red as Mars. It rotates on its axis apparently once every 40 days, which is unusual and appears to have no moon. Its size is somewhat smaller than Pluto. Sedna was discovered by the team of Mike Brown of Caltech, Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory and David Rabinowitz of Yale, on the 14th November 2003. (hence 2003VB12) but was only announced to the outside world on 15th March 2004. They named it Sedna and this was ratified by the International Astronomical Union. There are several variations of the myth around Sedna. She is one of the important goddesses of the Inuit Eskimo. She is usually described as a young and beautiful woman who grows up and rejects all suitors to her hand in marriage. Her widower father complains, beyond combing her beautiful hair and looking at its reflection in the calm sea, that she is eating him out of house and home and that it is imperative that she is married. Presently, a handsome young man comes along and offers her a fine lifestyle with plenty of furs. Thankful to be relieved of his burden her father agrees to the marriage and the man and his bride paddle off to distant shores where he lives. When they arrive home her new husband reveals himself to be a birdman, a fulmar, a giant raven whose home is high in the cliffs. Sedna finds herself in a home made up of stinking twigs and feathers with only cold, raw fish for food. She starts to cry unconsolably and her father, in the remote distance, believes he can hear the crying of his daughter. Father decides to go to Sedna and gets out his kayak. When he arrives there he doesn't like what he sees. The raven is away looking for fish food for his bride. So, father and daughter get into the boat and make haste to return home. On his return, the raven discovers Sedna has disappeared and flying across the ocean he spots her and her father in the kayak. The giant raven and the father do battle in the boat. The raven creates a storm which results in Sedna falling overboard.
