Sappho and Diana

back to minor planets Sappho by Roy MacKinnon Sappho is a medium sized asteroid discovered on 2nd May 1864. It is around 50 miles in diameter and with some orbital eccentricity. Nevertheless, it revolves around the Sun beyond the orbit of Mars in a period of about 3.5 years. Probably a carbonaceous type of asteroid, it requires a telescope to see it. The name was chose after the Greek poetess Sappho, who in her writings explored all different kinds of love. Conjugal and non-conjugal, heterosexual, lesbian and maternal and seems to serve like an intermediary between Venus and Neptune. The poetess referred to attraction and empathy and these qualities are associated with the astrology of the asteroid. While it can depict sexual preference, it more commonly refers to artistry and aesthetics. In synastry, in good aspect, it may indicate if a second person is a kindred spirit. Saphho is therefore also indicative of empathy but stressful aspects in a horoscope may indicate the inability of the individual to express aesthetic refinemnetor empathy easily. Similar stressful spect between two people in synastry may indicate a lack of resonance between them, a lack of empathy and possible repulsion. Diana While it also the name given to a lunar crater, Diana is a quite large main belt asteroid, which was discovered on 15th March 1865. It is a dark carbonaceous asteroid with some eccentricity, orbiting beyond that of Mars with a semi-major axis of 2.6 and an orbital period of 4.2 years. At about 80 miles in diameter it certainly is one of the larger asteroids. In mythology, Diana was the Roman goddess of untamed nature, of survival and protection and was known as the huntress. She was seen as the virgin New Moon Goddess and protected young life forms, both animal and human and did so fiercely thereby becoming venerated by the Amazons. In astrology Diana conveys an attunement to natural as opposed to civilised laws. She represents the girl, the virgin, the young woman and may reflect a concern for those in need of caring and protection. A degree of spiritual power may be present as well a certain independence, strength and a need for privacy. In a horoscope, if afflicted, Diana may point to psychological difficulties with regard to intimacy, to closeness and maturity and maybe resistance to to assuming a mature emotional outlook. The key term is 'protective concern'. For example, Diana trine to Uranus may indicate the right to protect and express one's personal individuality. Diana sextile Mercury may insist on the right to speak and be heard. Challenging aspects an suggest the failure to protect. Diana square Ceres may indicate a lack of concern for children or their nurturing. It could also indicate a failure to look after one's own needs, the needs of the inner child, the need to mother the self. In synastry, Diana can indicate camaraderie or sibling concern or lack thereof.
