torro and pandora saphho and diana aesculapia and kassandra PSYCHE by Roy MacKinnon Discovered on 17th March 1852, Psyche is one of the larger asteroids. It is somewhat spheroidal with its longest dimension around 150 miles and its shortest around100 miles. Psyche appears to be the core remnant of what could have been a much larger body initially. Psyche seems to consist of iron and nickel, the very metals expected to be in the core of the Earth or Mars. There are no surface carbonaceous rocks or water/ice remnants. It presumably has been created by an earlier collision with another solar system body. It orbits outside of Mars in some five years, rotates on its axis in five hours with a very high axial tilt of some 95 degrees and its semi-major axis or mean orbital distance is some trhee astrons or three times the distance of Earth to the Sun. In Greek Mythology, Psychy was a strikingly beautiful woman who fell in love with Eros. At its best there is a divine union between the souls of both people involved but psychologically there is a need to be aware of the operation of animus and anima, the subconscious parts of the 'psyche'. At its best Psyche represents the soul, intuition and spiritual union. Negatively, it can symbolise trauma or mental illness. A flowing aspect between Psyche and Uranus can symbolise precognition or the intuitive astrologer. A challenging aspect may represent the trauma of a mental breakdown. In synastry, Psyche contacts can refer to intuitive knowing or the converse. ICARUS Icarus is a maverick asteroid that was only discovered on 27th June 1949. It is a tiny asteroid - only one mile in diameter- with very high eccentricity. At its furthest from the Sun it travels even beyond Mars but at periheliom, at closest, it comes within the orbit of Mercury. It has an orbital period of over one year and on occasions its orbit brings it close to Earth. I mythology, Icarus was the son of Daedalus. Both were imprisoned by King Minos of Crete. In order to escape, Daedalus made artificial wings where feathers were fixed by wax and so father and son flew upwards to freedom. however, Icarus, so delighted with the escape, foolishly flew too close to the Sun, the wax on his wings melted and with it his feathers diappeared and so he fell into the sea. In astrology, Icarus therefore, represents where the person needs to be free and where one could possibly act thoughtlessly and irresponsibly. Icarus trine Mercury may indicate a person who delights in freedom of speech but when Icarus is square to Mercury, one may speak irresponsibly, thoughtlessly or recklessly. The same principle applies in synastry. A person whose Icarus is opposed by another's Jupiter may feel suffocated and in need of breaking free from the attitudes and philosophies of the other.
