ParallelsPARALLELS OF DECLINATION by Roy MacKinnon When the path of the Sun is examined on a daily basis it appears to move a fraction when measured against the backdrop of the stars and it is this position which gives us the horoscope longitude of Sun and planets. In reality it is not the Sun moving but Earth moving in its annual revolution around the Sun. The beginning of Aries is the starting point at the equinoxes since we have to start somewhere and each period of approximately one solar month is divided into the 30 degrees of each of the 12 signs. This is one set of celestial map co-ordinates. At right angles to it is another set of co- ordinates called latitude but it is not used in astrology. The Earth rotates on its axis at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees to the plane of its revolution around the Sun and it is the right angle to this path called DECLINATION which constitutes a kind of ‘North-South’ second set of co-ordinates and it is this (never more than 23.5 degrees for the Sun) factor north or south which gives us our seasons – the Sun being highest in the sky in the northern hemisphere in summer and at its lowest in winter. The planets mostly fall within this 23.5 degree plane but sometimes they do move beyond the solar limit and when they do they are said to be out-of-bounds. Such exceptional planetary positions may suggest a wildness or unusual nature with respect to the planet. Positive declination is northerly. Negative declination is southerly. When two planets are in the same degree of the ecliptic on the same side (like 15 degrees North) they are said to be in parallel but where one planet is 15 degrees North and the other 15 degrees South they are said to be in contraparallel. In natal charts these act like conjunctions but in transits contraparallels (those on opposite sides) act like oppositions and are less fortunate than in natal charts. The maximum orb allowed is one degree and 10 minutes or a total of 70 minutes of arc. Here is an example. The chart of the erudite academic, Immanuel Velikovsky shows he has Sun at 23N01, Mercury at 23N46 and Jupiter at 23N05. His MC is also at 22N22. So, clearly Sun, Mercury and Jupiter are all in parallel, all acting as if in conjunction one with the other. Small surprise Dr. Velikovsky exhibited academic talent. When the position of the MC is added in at 22N22 it is out of orb with Mercury at 23N46. However, declinations can be used to derive midpoints just like ordinary longitudinal planetary positions. The midpoint between Mercury and MC is at 23N04. Clearly this is very close to his Sun at 23N01 so we can therefore say that the MC is now definitely connected to the stellium. In terms of astrological interpretation this suggests that Dr Velikovsky’s academic expertise would be something he could use in pursuit of his career activities and when it is considered that the Sun/Jupiter midpoint is at 23N03 – only one minute of arc away from the first mentioned midpoint then it becomes clear how powerful the declinations were in his chart. For this reason it is always worthwhile examining a horoscope for its North – South axis of planetary co-ordinates, that is, its planetary declination positions.
