Pallas

Pallas by Roy MacKinnon Pallas was the second of the four major ones to be discovered. It was sighted shortly after Ceres on 28th March 1802 by the astronomer Heinrich Olbers, when he was trying to find Ceres. This asteroid was named after the goddess Pallas Athene. At 570 km or just over 300 miles, she is smaller than Ceres. This makes it the third most massive asteroid holding something of the order of 7% of the mass of the major asteroid belt. The orbital period at 4.6 years is similar to Ceres but Pallas is distincly different in various ways. Firstly, it appears to consist of silicates, having a spectrum of carbonaceous chondrites. Secondly, Pallas has an orbital plane at 35 degrees to the plane of the asteroid belt and an orbital eccentricity of 0.23 (greater than Pluto), which makes it somewhat unusual. Its perihelion is 2.1 AU and aphelion 3.4 AU. It has been difficult to gauge its speed of rotation on its axis but latest estimates suggest a rotational period of 8 hours. Pallas Athene is one of the great characters in Greek mythology. She was parthenogetically born from Zeus, from whose head she sprung into life and was the favourite child of Zeus. In the mythology, the nature of Pallas is described firstly that she is a wise but warrior-like goddess. She is seen as creative and having influence in the world of the arts. perhaps her most famous legend is that of her assistance to Perseus in his slaying of Medusa. Pallas and Medusa are originally Amazon warriors but Medusa turned to stone anybody who dared to cast their gaze on the crone. As the only beautiful one of the three Gorgon sisters, Medusa, to rid the world of her evil ways, required that Pallas devise a cunning plan. Hermes gave Perseus his sword but Pallas gave perseus a shield so that instead of looking directly at the crone he could strike her using the reflection in the shield. The plan of Pallas was successful. In a horoscope the symbolism of Pallas represents intuition, wisdom, insight, intelligence and creativity. It is in some ways the partner of Mercury but whereas Mercury governs logical thinking, Pallas governs the intuition, wisdom and creative faculties. These will be enhanced or challenged according to the planets aspecting Pallas and the nature of the aspect. In trine to Pallas, Saturn is likely to endow the individual with enhanced ability to concentrate and focus and the strenght to campaign against unjust social laws. However, in square to Saturn, Pallas is likely to surface as indicative of possible conflicts between the need for practicality and freedom of artistic and creative expression. Individuals may have poor confidence based on the unrealised expectation of parents , who put on pressure and make him/her believe that they are doomed to failure. Both John Lennon and George Harrison had Sun conjunct Pallas in their horoscopes. John had the conjunction in Libra and George in Pisces. Clearly, they were able to bring their enhanced creativity to their music and singing.
