Nepal Massacre -continued by Liz Seddon Prince Dipendra was in a coma after the shooting and died without having gained consciousness . He was the official king for just three days. He was succeeded by Gyanendra, who took over upon his death on 4th June 2001. Gyanendra was born in Kathmandu as the second son of Crown Prince Mahendra and his wife Crown Princess Indra. After his birth, his father was told by a court astrologer not to look at his newborn son because it would bring him bad luck, so Gyanendra was sent to live with his grandmother. In November 1950, during a political plot, both his father and his grandfather King Tribhuvan along with other royals fled to India, leaving the young Gyanendra as the only male member of the Royal Family in Nepal. He was brought back to the capital Kathmandu by the Prime Minister Mohan Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, who had him declared king on 7 November 1950. After opposition to the hereditary rule of the Rana Prime Ministers from India, a deal was reached in January 1951, and his grandfather King Tribhuvan returned to Nepal and resumed the throne (according to Wikipedia). Gyanendra was the only family member left unharmed as he was out of the country at the time of the incident. What was going on in his chart at the time? Transiting Saturn was conjunct his Mars making this a time of frustration and restricted movement while at the same time tr Neptune opposed natal Saturn. This can be a difficult transit creating fear, depression and dissolution. However, to top all of this, tr Pylenor at 24 degrees Taurus squared Uranus in the heavens and both afflicted his natal Moon, personalising this transit and likely to have the effect of sudden collapse of the family structure because it is flawed and in need of rebuilding. This was certainly the case here as not many family members survived the incident. One was his son Paras, who became Crown Prince, something the people did not like as he was seen to be irresponsible. In fact they blamed him for the incident as he had been involved in a drunken car accident before in which he killed a popular singer. He also liked to 'play' with guns. In any event, conspiracy theories were abound. It is interesting to see that in Gyanendra's chart Pylenor is in aspect to his Sun just like King Birendra's, by conjunction and by square aspect in Crown Prince Dipendra's chart. What was it in all of these men's essential being that needed to be cleansed and restructured? King Birendra was an absolute monarch. He inherited a country where political parties were banned and he ruled through a system of local and regional councils known as panchayats. Birendra resented the absolute monarch tag maintaining that he presided over a democracy in which representatives to the assembly were indirectly elected and saying that his poor and backward country could not afford a democracy based on party politics and that it needed firm and decisive government. In an attempt to maintain the panchayat system of government prominent leaders of the Nepali Congress Party were arrested. Because of the growing pro democracy movement Birendra announced that a referendum to decide between a non-party and a multi-party system would be held. The referendum was held in May 1980 with the non-party system winning by a narrow margin 55% to 45%. During the 1980s the restraints that had been imposed on political organisations were starting to ease and liberal student-led groups were starting to appear demanding constitutional change in Nepal. On 9 November 1990 Birendra promulgated the new constitution transforming Nepal into a constitutional monarchy. However, the quarrels between various political parties and numerous social problems led to the Nepalese Civil War, a conflict between Maoist rebels and government forces, which lasted from 1996 until 2006. When King Gyanendra took over, his confrontational approach with the established political parties was met with widespread censure. In April 2006 the constitutionalists staged protests and strikes in Kathmandu against King Gyanendra's direct rule. The royal government responded by declaring a curfew, which was enforced with live firearms and tear gas. On 10 June 2006, the parliament scrapped the major powers of the king, including his right to veto laws. This ended the idea of a "King in Parliament,". All powers of the 239-year-old monarchy were stripped, making King Gyanendra a civilian king under the interim constitution. On 28th May 2008, the monarchy was abolished by the Constituent Assembly. Transiting Pylenor was at the midpoint of Sun/Venus and Moon/Uranus of the Nepal chart!
