Minor Planets

The Minor Planets by Roy MacKinnon The Solar System can be divided into two sections - the part from the Sun on the way out to Jupiter - and the remaining section beyond Jupiter. Apart from the planets, which are large, there are many smaller planetoids, usually called asteroids and these can be tiny-about 1 km diameter and there appear to be some 750,000 of these, most of which fall within the first section. Main Belt Asteroids. This is where most asteroids live within the orbit of Jupiter at 5 AU or less and over 10,000 of these have been named and numbered. The first discovered of these bodies are large in comparison to the others and have astrological significance. The big four are Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta. Also within the main asteroid belt are some well-known asteroids such as Eros, Amor, Psyche, Icarus, Sappho, Diana and Hercules and many others well worth studying. Their meaning in a horoscope depends on the symbolism of their name and their astronomocal parameters. Damocloid-like Asteroids. This is a maverick class of asteroids with strongly elliptical orbits. At perihelion they come fairly close to the Sun, usually well within the orbit of Jupiter, but at aphelion they can be as far away as Saturn or even further from the Sun. Hidalgo, Damocles, Dioretsa, Don Quixote and 1996PW all belong to this class. Orbital periods may be enormous as with 1996PW. Centaurs. These, like the Damocloids are asteroids with quite elliptical orbits but their perihelion is always beyond that of Jupiter, with aphelion generally no further away than Neptune. Some are comets. They too are mavericks. Notable centaurs are Chiron, Pholus, Nessus, Pylenor, Hylonome, Chariklo and Asbolus. These asteroids belong to the second group beyond Jupiter. Transneptunian Objects. This category includes all remaining outer solar system objects orbiting a great distance. They have four sub-categories which consist of Plutinos and Cubewanos. These make up the Edgeworth -Kuiper Belt. Beyond that are elliptical orbiters called Scattered Disc Objects. The most distant bodies at aphelion are classed as Oort Cloud Objects. Into the Plutino category come Orcus, Ixion and Huya. All orbit the Sun twice in the time it takes Neptune to orbit three times. Cubewanos, named after the first one to be discovered 1992 QB1, include Varuna an Quaoar. The Scattered Disc Objects include Eris and 1996 TL66. And the most famous Oort Cloud Object is Sedna , which takes over 10,000 years to orbit the Sun.
