Midpointsback to astro technigues Midpoints by Roy MacKinnon If you look at the clock below set out as in horoscope form then you can easily appreciate midpoints or the points half-way between the position of any two planets 10 11 9 12 8 1 7 2 6 3 5 4 This is a wheel created as you would the order of the signs and the houses - in other words in reverse order to that of the numbers on the clock face. Where the figure 1 is an astrologer expects to find the ascendant. Where the figure 2 is you would expect to find the following sign to the one marked at figure 1. Each sign has 30 degrees, so by going round the clock face there are 360 degrees. Suppose that 0 degrees Aries is at figure 1 then 0 degrees Leo will be positioned where the figure 5 is - that is a further 120 degrees on from figure 1. Half-way in between is the firure 3. This will be where the sign Gemini begins. That is 60 degrees. So, 3 on the clock face is half way between 1 and 5. 60 degrees separate figure 1 from figure 3 (2 signs) and the same number of degrees separate figures 3 and 5. That is - figure 3 is at the middle point (midpoint) of figures 1 and 5. To find a midpoint therefore all you have to do is to go through the same process. That is you need to convert the planet position into degrees only starting with 0 degrees Aries and increasing by 30 degrees for each sifn that follows until Pisces is reached, which is at 330 degrees. Add the two figures together and divide by 2. reconvert to sign language. So, Sries begins at 0 degrees, Taurus at 30 degrees, Gemini at 60 degrees, Cancer at 90 degrees, Leo at 120 degrees, virgo at 150 degrees, Libra at 180 degrees, Scorpio at 210 degrres, Sagittarius at 240 degrees, Capricorn at 270 degrees, Aquarius at 300 degrees and Pisces at 330 degrees. A planet at 19 degrees Capricorn in numerical value will be at 270 + 19 degrees = 289 degrees. A planet at 13 degrees Taurus will be at 30 + 13 = 43 degrees. Adding together results in 332 degrees. Divide by 2 = 166 degrees. 150 degrees is Virgo so the midpoint is at 16 degrees Virgo, which is the NEAR midpoint. There is a second midpoint in the directly opposite sign and degree, the FAR midpoint - that is 16 degrees Pisces. Just as figure 6 stands for Virgo on the clock face, then figure 12 opposite stands for Pisces. Both are of equal importance. Any planet that is found conjunct either position is said to be in midpoint to the two planets forming the midpoint. So, if the Sun is at 19 degrees Capricorn and Mars is at 13 degrees Taurus, then if Jupiter is at 16 degrees Pisces, all three planets - Sun, Mars and Jupiter are linked through the midpoint. An understanding of what this means must involve symbolism for all three planets. E.g. methodical self-expression (Sun Capricorn) with practical energy (Mars Taurus) but also with optimism and sensitivity to others (Jupiter Pisces). The orb to be used is a maximum of around two degrees, so Pisces 14 and 18 degrees are both permissible. A further refinement to midpoints is this. Any planet in major aspect to where the midpoint is forms an aspect to the two planets. So, if instead of jupiter at 16 degrees Pisces, Pluto is at 16 degrees Sagittarius, then Pluto would be in aspect to the Sun/Mars midpoint. This is because 16 of Sagittarius is at 240 + 16 degrees =256 degrees, which is 90 degrees after 166 degrees of 16 of Virgo and so Pluto would form a square to the Sun/Mars midpoint. Interpretation would involve keywords for all three planets - Sun, Mars and Pluto. Alternatively, if a planet such as Saturn had been found at 16 of Gemini opposte Pluto, then that too would have formed a square to the midpoint and brought together the symbolism of Sun, Mars and Saturn. Fortunately, most astrology computer programmes calculate the important midpoint positions for us. Whether the 3 planets involved in the midpoint act harmoniously depends on the nature of the planets, the signs and houses and the aspects formed. The Ascendant, Midheaven and the Moon's North Node can also be used to form midpoints or become positions thrown into prominence because they stand at midpoints.
