Lucian Freud Dies 22 July 2011
Realist painter Lucian Freud, one of Britain's most distinguished and highly regarded artists, has died aged 88. New York dealer William Acquavella said Freud had died at his London home on Wednesday after an unspecified illness. Known chiefly for his thickly impasted portrait and figure paintings, he was widely considered the pre-eminent British artist of his time. His works are noted for their psychological penetration, and for their often discomfiting examination of the relationship between artist and model. His works have been increasingly sought after at recent auctions and his portrayal of an overweight nude woman sleeping on a couch sold in 2008 for $33.6m (£20.6m) - a world record for a work by a living artist. Mr Acquavella described Freud "as one of the great painters of the 20th Century"."In company he was exciting, humble, warm and witty. He lived to paint and painted until the day he died, far removed from the noise of the art world."
Freud was the son of an Austrian Jewish father, Ernst Ludwig Freud, an architect, and a German Jewish mother, Lucie née Brasch. He was a grandson of Sigmund Freud, elder brother of the late broadcaster, writer and politician Clement Freud. He moved with his family to England in 1933 to escape the rise of Nazism and became a British citizen in 1939. He went to the Central School of Art, in London and then to the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing and London's Goldsmiths College. Freud was recognised early on and after a spell in the Merchant Navy in 1942, had his first one-man show in 1944, when he was 21.Freud is rumoured to have fathered as many as 40 children although this number is generally accepted as an exaggeration. After an affair with Lorna Garman, he went on to marry her niece Kitty (real name Kathleen, daughter of sculptor Jacob Epstein and socialite Kathleen Garman) in 1948. After four years and the birth of two daughters, Annie and Annabel, their marriage ended. In 1953 he married Lady Caroline Blackwood, a society girl and writer. The marriage was dissolved in Mexico in 1958. Freud also had children by Bernardine Coverley (fashion designer Bella Freud and writer Esther Freud); Suzy Boyt (five children); and Katherine Margaret McAdam (four children: Paul Freud, Lucy Freud, David Freud and Jane McAdam Freud, who is also an artist).Freud was a member of the Order of Merit, one of Britain's most prestigious chivalry honours presented to individuals by the Queen for great achievement in the fields of the arts, learning, literature and science. The honour is restricted to 24 members at any one time, plus additional foreign recipients and past recipients include Florence Nightingale, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Edward Elgar and Mother Teresa. (excerpts from wikipedia and bbc news)
Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate gallery, said: "The vitality of Freud's nudes, the intensity of the still life paintings and the presence of his portraits of family and friends guarantee Lucian Freud a unique place in the pantheon of late 20th Century art. "His early paintings redefined British art and his later works stand comparison with the great figurative painters of any period."
Lucian Freud was born 8 Decmber 1933, Berlin, Germany. Time not known so I have used noon. What is immediately obvious are the grand trines in his chart. One in water made up of Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto and one in fire of Neptune, Sun and Chiron. I think they can account for his artistic ability, his interest in psychological relationships and also his witty charm. Saturn is on the Sun,Mercury/Neptune midpoint opposite Chiron. Together they now form a Kite configuration. The Kite is made up of a grand trine, two sextiles and an opposition aspect. The opposition planet is the one that motivates the person. The grand trine alone may have lacked that. The opposition planet being Saturn, gives the ability to become completely absorbed in a subject that finds a medium of self-expression through his art, usually involving other people, as a way of establishing and coming to terms with his own limitations. His artistic ability is further backed up by Neptune on the Jupiter/Venus midpoint. But Venus in Scorpio is square Mars in Aquarius. These aspects are likely to have contributed to his many love affairs. On the one hand needing the intensity and fantasy of a relationship and on the other, his need to be his own person, wanting space and variety. L.S.
Boy on a Sofa fetched £1.49m last year, a record price for a work on paper by Freud.
