JunoJuno by Roy MacKinnon Juno was discovered by the German astronomer Karl Harding, on 1st September 1804. It was the third one of the big four to be discovered. However, it is substantially smaller than either Ceres or Pallas and consequently accounts for only about 1% of the mass of the major asteroid belt. It is relatively dense (over 3gms/cc) and appears to be a stony asteroid. Its orbital period of some 4.4 years is similar to that of Ceres and Pallas and it has a high eccentricity - around 0.26, which means the difference between perihelion and aphelion is substantial - 2.0 for the former and three for the latter. In this respect it is similar to Pallas. Juno's orbital plane is inclined at some 12% to the ecliptic, which is relatively normal. However, the rotation on its axis is quite anomalous at an estimated 51 degrees of tilt. Juno reveals a large crater on its surface of about 60 miles in diameter, suggesive of a collision with another asteroid. A study by astronomer James Hilton suggests that Juno's orbit was perturbed and changed slightly around 1839, probably due to a passing asteroid. The rotation period appears to be around 7 hours. There is also believed to be an irregular or lumpy contour to the sphere of the asteroid, which is fresh looking and suggests a recent meteoric impact. The recent NASA mission to Ceres and Vesta may also incorporate Juno, if the project goes well. In mythology, Juno was the wife of Jupiter(Zeus) and may be responsible for the name of the month of June. She represents women's rights to autonomy and independence within the confines of a committed relationship. She is portrayed as the faithful wife, who remained so to Jupiter, notwithstanding his philandering. As such, she is representative of marriage, violence within relationships, women's rights and sexual infidelity. She is also associated with marital finances. The astrology of Juno unsurprisingly therefore is concerned with the dynamics operating within both personal and professional relationships. Specifically, Juno can be concerned with sexual infidelity, the 'one-night-stand' and a wide variety of situations involving psychological projection. Operating like a second Venus, this asteroid depicts whether relationships dynamics between two people operate smoothly or not, and if not, why not? For example, if Juno is trine to Saturn then this suggests the ability to construct harmonious and committed relationships, both personally and professionally. However, if Saturn is in square aspect to Juno then the individual may have a fear of commitment, which can inhibit the formation of relationships or alternatively, stay within the 'shell' of a relationship out of duty or material security. Sometimes, there is an age difference between partners, which can be expressed by the developement of parental or childlike role, or even a professional one, where inner commitment is absent. Marilyn Monroe had Juno in Pisces in the 8th House square to the Sun. Her relationship life is well known. She was challenged to try and integrate her need to express her individuality within a committed relationship where there was a need for co-operation and teamwork.
