John McAleese 1949-2011 5 September 2011Mar
John McAleese (From Herald, Scotland).Soldier: Born April 25, 1949; Died August 26, 2011John McAleese, who has died aged 62, was the former Stirlingshire teenager who epitomised the sentiment “Who Dares Wins”.Having escaped a career down the mines, he went on to join the army and was selected for the SAS, gaining iconic status as one of the fearless soldiers who led Operation Nimrod, the assault on the besieged Iranian Embassy in London. But that sunny evening in London in May 1980, he was the enigmatic commando who blew out the embassy windows as the world watched him storm the balcony.Six days earlier six armed men had taken 26 people hostage at the building and demanded the release of political prisoners. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was barely a year into her premiership and determined to demonstrate how the country would deal with terrorists. The dramatic end to the siege came after the body of one hostage was pushed out onto the embassy steps. With television cameras trained on the facade, the elite SAS soldiers were ordered in and subsequently came under the spotlight like never before.
While other teams sprang into action unseen around other parts of the building, the then Lance Corporal – known as Mac – was in full view on the balcony, laying the explosive charge and leaping back as the blast blew in the windows above the street. He later acknowledged: “I was captured on film going in through the front window without being asked.”It was the regiment’s most public role and the crack teams concluded the operation in less than 15 minute, killing five terrorists and rescuing the 19 remaining hostages.Rusty Firmin, who led one of the other sub-teams involved that evening, said: “The striking thing about John was that he was a no-mess guy. Whatever the mission, he would go all out to achieve that mission. That takes self-determination and a lot of willpower. He would not back down for anybody – a very courageous guy.”The pair, who were best friends for decades, met in 1973, each determined to get a green beret. Mr McAleese, who was from Laurieston, Falkirk, had enlisted in the Army in 1970. He achieved his green beret, as did Rusty, went on to 59 Commando, Royal Engineers and spent more than 16 years of his 22 years’ army service with the SAS. He won the Military Medal in 1988 for an operation in Northern Ireland and left the Army in 1991 to become a security consultant. During his career he guarded royalty and politicians and, as a freelance. His son, Serjeant Paul McAleese of 2nd Battalion the Rifles, was also an outstanding soldier and had dreamed of following him into the SAS but was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan two years ago. After the funeral a distraught Mr McAleese called on Gordon Brown, the then Prime Minister, to provide British troops with better equipment or to resign. Grief-stricken, he moved to live and work in Greece, where he died in Thessaloniki of a heart attack.Married twice, he is survived by his wife and three children, Hayley, Jessica and Kieran.John McAleese was born 25 April 1949, Launston, Stirling, Scotland. Time not known, so noon used. What is noticeable about this chart is the lack of water. Not having his t.o.b. I don’t know if any of the planets occupy water houses. Nevertheless, it would seem that showing emotions would not have been so easy for him.
That he was stubborn and determinedly single-minded can be seen from Venus (conjunct the Sun) and Mercury square Pluto. His devil-may-care attitude can be attributed to Mars in Aries with the Sun-Venus in Taurus square Jupiter in Aquarius. This aspect would have inclined him to push out the boundaries, to take on more than was ’safe’. However, the risks involved would have been carefully planned out as Mars made positive aspects to both Uranus and Saturn. Mars was also closely conjunct the Moon’s Node indicating that his life-path was always going to be one of action. The only time John gave in to his emotions was when he lost his beloved son, who was killed in 2009 while serving in the British Army. People close to him believe that he gave up after that, even shrinking in stature according to his daughter. Interestingly, the centaur Hylonome indicates loss and (sometimes insurmountable) grief. In John's chart it is at 4-04’ Taurus, very closely conjunct his Sun (his son, his creation). Chiron is also quincunx Venus and indicates that painful adjustments are having to be made regarding all that he valued. It would seem that he was not able to do this. It is said that he died of a broken heart. L.S.
