John Lennon

John Lennon (1940 - 1980) Liz Seddon 8 December 2010 A British musician, an icon in popular culture, John Winston Lennon MBE became a megastar. Born and raised inLiverpool, Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze; his first band, The Quarrymen, evolved in 1960 into the internationally renowned rock 'n roll group, "The Beatles," followed by a solo career that reflected the angst of the times. Known as the 'Fab Four,' the Beatles arrived in America, taking the country by storm in the "British Invasion." On February 7, 1964, with two million copies sold of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," 4,000 screaming fans waited for the Beatles' arrival at 1:20 PM at JFK airport, creating a wave of hysteria that sweptthe young men into history. The songwriting team of Lennon and Paul McCartney, performing with theircompatriots George Harrison and Ringo Starr, created music enjoyed by millions long after the group disbandedin 1970. As the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career and wenton performing with his wife, conceptual artist, Yoko Ono and produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After dropping outof the music scene in 1975, to devote time to his family, Lennon re-emerged in 1980 with his critically acclaimed"Double Fantasy" album. He was murdered three weeks after its release by Mark Chapman.Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, his drawings, on film, and in interviews, and he became controversial through his political activism. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement.Lennon had spent much of his music career indulging in illegal substances, including LSD and pot. In 1968, Lennon went on a drug binge with booze, acid, speed, cocaine and heroin. The following year he was denied entrance into the U.S. because of a police drug-bust in the UK. On March 5, 1970, Lennon and his wife checked into a detox clinic in London but he fell off the wagon in 1972, going into seclusion with drugs and booze. In September 1980 he talked about his family and his rebellious nature: Part of me would like to be accepted by all facets of society and not be this loudmouthed lunatic musician. But I cannot be what I am not. Because of my attitude, all the other boys' parents ... instinctively recognised what I was, which was a troublemaker, meaning I did not conform and I would influence their kids, which I did. ... I did my best to disrupt every friend's home ... Partly, maybe, it was out of envy that I didn't have this so-called home, but I really did ... There were five women who were my family. Five strong, intelligent women. Five sisters. Those women were fantastic ... that was my first feminist education ... One happened to be my mother ... she just couldn't deal with life. She had a husband who ran away to sea and the war was on and she couldn't cope with me, and when I was four-and-a-half, I ended up living with her elder sister ... the fact that I wasn't with my parents made me see that parents are not gods.

As of 2010, Lennon's solo album sales in the United States exceed 14 million units, and as writer, co-writer or performer, he is responsible for 27 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all-time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.John Lennon was born on 9th October 1940, 6.30pm, Liverpool, England 002W55' 53N25'.His childhood difficulties are indicated by the challenging aspects between Chiron/Pluto, Moon, Mercury and Saturn/Jupiter. The Sun on the Neptune/Mercury midpoint would have found expression in his imaginative writing and musical ability, particularly within a partnership. First with Paul McCartney and later with his wife, Yoko Ono. Mars, ruler of the ascendant, conjunct Neptune trine Uranus and sextile Pluto (linking in to a t-square with the Moon and Mercury) suggests that a lot of concentrated effort was expended into communicating his dreams of 'peace' to the public. This is what drove him on for a time and would have contributed to giving his life value, the more so as Venus is on the Pluto/Mars midpoint. He was shot, thirty years ago today, around 10:50 pm as John and Yoko returned to their New York apartment in The Dakota. Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times at the entrance to the building.

Lennon was taken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:07 pm. Earlier that evening, Lennon had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman. Ono issued a statement the next day, saying "There is no funeral for John," ending it with the words, "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please pray the same for him." His body was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Ono scattered his ashes in New York's Central Park, where the Strawberry Fields memorial was later created. Chapman pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life; as of 2010, he remains in prison, having been repeatedly denied parole.
