Ian Cameron Dies

Ian Cameron Dies Lis Seddon 9th September 2010

David Cameron today paid tribute to his 'amazing' father after he died suddenly yesterday following a stroke while he was on holiday. The Prime Minister praised the way 'The Dad', as he called Ian Cameron, always looked on the bright side and brought so much joy to his family's lives. He and his siblings expressed relief that he had been with his wife and enjoying himself on holiday when he fell ill and vowed to 'treasure' his memory. Mr Cameron also thanked French President Nicolas Sarkozy for organising a helicopter that meant he was able to reach the 77-year-old before he slipped away.

Mr Cameron, in a statement with his three siblings, said: 'Our dad was an amazing man - a real life enhancer. 'He never let the disability he was born with or the complications in later life get in the way of his incredible sense of fun and enjoyment. 'He touched a lot of lives in lots of different ways and was a brilliant husband and father. You could never be down for long when he was around. We will miss him terribly but have a bank of memories that can never be exhausted.' The statement continued: 'This was unexpected and sudden, but he was having a wonderful holiday and was with great friends. 'Above all he was with mum, to whom he was devoted, and he was happy - and the end came quickly. We will treasure all the joy he brought us.' The Prime Minister added: 'I am extremely grateful to President Sarkozy, who helped me get to the hospital while dad was still with us, so I could say goodbye.'We would like to thank Nicolas and everyone at the hospital who worked so hard to look after dad.' Sarkozy is thought to have given over his summer residence, the Fort de Bregancon, to Mr Cameron who stayed in France overnight and will travel home today. He dashed across the Channel yesterday morning after being told in a 6am phone call from his mother Mary that his father was seriously ill. He arrived at his hospital bedside - the man he described as his role model and 'a huge hero figure' - shortly before he died. His sudden death comes little more than a fortnight after David and Samatha Cameron celebrated the birth of their daughter Florence. Sadly, her grandfather never got to meet the new addition to the family. His death means the Prime Minister is grieving for another member of his family less than two years after the loss of his oldest son Ivan. The six-year-old, who had severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy, died in February 2009. Last night a friend of the Camerons said of his dash to see his father: 'He was so relieved to have got there. 'He was also thankful that his father had been enjoying a happy family holiday when he passed away.'

By RICHARD PENDLEBURYAside from confidence and an easy charm, Ian Cameron possessed two characteristics which were usefully passed on to his son David. One was a fierce determination, particularly in the face of adversity. The second, not unrelated to the first, was an optimistic outlook. David Cameron's key life challenges came in adulthood. But the Prime Minister's stockbroker father, whom he once described as 'my role model', was tested from the moment of his birth with severe deformation of both legs. It is fair to say that in spite of this unpromising start and further serious health problems, Ian Cameron - known to his family as 'The Dad' - lived a life at least as full and as fun as the most robust of his contemporaries. And, of course, he survived long enough to see his second son not only in Downing Street but citing him as the inspiration for the cornerstone Government concept of 'Big Society'.Ian Cameron was himself the son of a wealthy London stockbroker. His mother was the daughter of banking family with Polish-Jewish roots. Born in Aberdeenshire, his disabilities were dreadful; legs shortened below the knees, feet twisted and lacking three toes. He underwent a number of operations in childhood which helped ease the pain and improve mobility, but he did not grow much more than five feet in height.Ian's later years were spent cheerfully ignoring his disability. Almost 20 years ago he had to have one of his troublesome legs amputated. Four years ago he lost the second, along with the sight of one eye. No matter. There was still fun to be had. David Cameron spoke of his 'indomitable spirit' and said of him in an interview: 'My father has never, in any way, considered himself to be disabled.' On another occasion, son said of father's optimism: 'The glass with him was half-full, normally with something alcoholic.'

The new Prime Minister later paid tribute to the man who had shaped him through his 'Big Society' concept of community, duty and mutual assistance. He said the germ came from witnessing how his father and mother had lived their lives. 'My father used to work really long days but he always had time for the parochial church council and the parish council,' he said. 'My mother was a magistrate. 'But the thing that strikes me looking back is how they wore their public service so lightly. This wasn't some great duty with a capital D that they felt the need to grandstand about. 'Like so many of their generation the values implicit in the Big Society - duty, responsibility, obligation - are instinctive; it's just what you should do.' It's what Ian Cameron did. And the nation will owe him a great debt if his son can turn these fine words into a coherent future.Ian Cameron was born 12 October 1932, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His chart is the center horoscope while David's is the outer. That there were severe difficulties in his life is noticable by the Grand Cross in cardinal signs. That it was connected into dificulties regarding mobility can be seen by the position of Mercury as part of this grand cross, opposing Uranus and squaring Pluto and Saturn. Uranus and Pluto are also part of a T-square with the Sun, indicating the powerful need within to be able to express his own personality despite his disability. His optimism and 'glass half full attitude' is likely to have come from the Venus, Neptune, Jupiter conjunction. The sudden loss of his Father can be seen in David's chart by the conjunction of transiting Jupiter and Uranus on his descendant, square the Mid-heaven. Transiting Saturn is now established in his first house and on the Venus/Ascendant midpoint, while transiting Pluto is in his 4th house, indicating the transformation of the family that started with the death of his son Ivan.
