More than 24 hours after the devastating fire broke out at the jail in Comayagua, the scene is still one of confusion and desperation.The air is heavy with the smell of the charred bodies and almost everyone is wearing a facemask to protect themselves from the stench.Hundreds of Honduran soldiers and police are on hand to keep order while forensics teams appear every few minutes carrying another body bag out the front door.As well as the dead, the survivors have been emerging too, as groups of injured men have been taken out at gunpoint to be treated.Beyond the perimeter fence, family members have been waiting anxiously for news.One man said he had heard nothing about his cousin, while another woman said she'd been told that two of her relatives had perished in the fire.
Some survivors told investigators that an inmate started the blaze by setting fire to his mattress. Authorities are also looking at whether there was an electrical fault. Whatever the cause, the Honduran government has said the prison system needs to be overhauled. But similar promises were made in 2004 when a fire at a prison in San Pedro Sula left 107 inmates dead. Prisons in Honduras, which has the world's highest murder rate, hold some 13,000 inmates in a system designed for 8,000.Human Rights Watch said the disaster was ultimately the result of chronic overcrowding in Honduran jails. It also blamed poor conditions and called for the prison system to be overhauled. Honduras President Porfirio Lobo has pledged a "full and transparent" investigation after the fire, which killed more than 350 inmates. Mr Lobo also suspended local and national prison officials while the inquiry into the "unacceptable" tragedy at the jail in Comayagua was conducted. Many victims were burned or suffocated to death in their cells.The call to the fire brigade went out at 22:59 CST. The fire is likely to have started shortly before then. Uranus is at 2-25' degrees of Aries (fire) on the Jupiter/Neptune midpoint at 2-29' degrees of Aries and trine the Moon at 2-18' of Sagittarius. This is indicative of the chaos surrounding a sudden incident that may affect many people. Mercury, ruler of the 8th house, is on the Neptune/Chiron midpoint at 2-05' degrees of Pisces squares the Moon and suggests smoke inhalation causing the death of the people. This is echoed by Neptune on the Sun/Chiron midpoint, which indicates the suffering and deaths caused by suffocation. Chiron at 4-32' degrees of Pisces and the Saturn/Pluto midpoint at 4-07' of Sagittarius says much of the same. Scorpio 09-18' is rising and Pluto, it's ruler, is at 8-47' degrees of Capricorn, quincunx the Mc and in square aspect to Venus at 08-08' degrees of Aries, ruler of the 12th house of isolation as in prisons and hospitals. This aspect is an indication of the intensity of the fire.
Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn is in the 12th house of institutions and Mars, the ruler of Aries, is at 19-55' r degrees of Virgo, on the Saturn/Mc midpoint at 19-30' degrees of Virgo and the further Venus/Neptune midpoint at 19-17' degrees of Pisces. These indicate the chaos that followed when the fire enveloped the prisoners who were trapped in their cells, rendering them totally helpless and either burning or suffocating them. L.S.
