back to minor planets HERCULES by Liz Seddon
The asteroid Hercules (or Herakles) was discovered on 7th November 1991, by Shoemaker at Palomar. It has quite an eccentric orbit, coming closer to the Sun at 0.4166 AU than Earth and Venus and going out in the vicinity of the asteroid belt at 3.2481AU, getting very close to Mars it does so. It takes 2.48 years to complete its orbit and in that period lingers in the signs Aquarius, Pisces, Aries and Taurus before completing its cycle through the other eight signs in less than one year.
In the mythology, Hercules was the son of Zeus (Jupiter) and Alcmene, whom Zeus had seduced after he had disguised himself as her husband. Hera (Juno) his wife, tried to kill Hercucles by sending him snakes, which he killed. She was later tricked into nurturing him, feeding him from her own breast. He was even named after her, Hercules means 'Hera's glory', However, when she discovered she had been tricked she was so incensed that she did everything in her power to make his life miserable. When Hercules reached manhood, he waged war against the kingdom of Orchomenos in Boeotia. Hercules won the war and in gratitude King Creon gave him his daughter, Megara. They produced three daughters and lived happily for many years, until, in a fit of madness, which Hera had sent him, he killed them all. In order to redeem himself from this terrible act, he visited the god Apollo, who ordered him to go to the king of Tiryns, Eurystheus, and perform the twelve labours. Along way, Hercules had many other adventures and fought many battles including the one with the centaurs, which eventually led to his death.
In its orbit Hercules partakes of the energy of the Sun, Earth, Venus and Mars, nearly reaching Jupiter. Astrologically, Hercules's placement in the horoscope is likely to indicates where one may be capable of exceptional strength, or, depending on the aspects, the difficulties encountered on the way to accessing that strength. It is also interesting to note here that Hercules's involvement with the centaurs led to the death of many of them, including Chiron, Pholus, Nessus and Hylonome, as well as eventually, his own death. This could indicate that we may be able work with the placement of Hercules in our natal chart in order to find a way out of the difficulties encountered by the positions of the other centaurs. For instance, the position of Nessus could indicate where we have difficulty letting go of anger and jealousy to the point where it poisons our outlook on life and prohibits us moving forward. The sign and house Hercules is in may show the way in which to overcome. One such an example is Nelson Mandela, who for twenty seven years was incarcerated in a South African prison. His natal Hercules is at 29.12 degrees of Pisces in his fourth house conjunct Chiron at 3.25 degrees Aries, Nessus is at 9 degrees Aries, placing Chiron on the Hercules/Nessus midpoint. (The wounding inflicted and the intense revengeful emotions associated with the situation would have presented as many obstacles to overcome.) All in square to the Jupiter/Pluto conjunction in the seventh house square to Mars in 10th house (the loss of freedom and the powerless- ness to act out his will as imposed upon him by his enemies). He would have fought many battles on many fronts (Hercules) and would have to search deep within himself (4th house) to feel compassion (Pisces) towards those who had wronged him. This he was able to do. It was his exceptional strength and won him the hearts of people the world over.
