HARRY PATCH DIES by Roy MacKinnon 28 JUly 2009 A week after the death of Henry Allingham, then the oldest man in the world, Harry Patch, The Last Tommy, and third oldest man in the world has died in his care home in Wells in Somerset in England at the age 111 years. He died in the morning of Saturday, 25th July, 09. Born on 17th June, 1898 (time not known) at Combe Down in Somerset Harry started an apprenticeship to learn plumbing. Educated in a Church of England school Harry didn’t volunteer as a soldier but was conscripted in 1916 as a private into The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. He trained as an assistant gunner in a crew of five required to operate a Lewis Gun and arrived at Passchendaele in June, 1917. The battle at Passchendaele is described by some military commentators as the worst ground battle of modern times. Some 300,000 soldiers died of whom 70,000 were British. Harry fought in the trenches until late September 1917, when he was badly wounded by a shell which killed three of the crew and cut open his stomach down to the groin. Harry lived in silence with the memories of the holocaust for 80 years and only decided to speak out as his hundredth birthday approached. Harry was certainly a religious man but more importantly he had a marked spirituality. On one occasion as a colleague lay dying on the battlefield Harry in appreciation of the suffering of the dying held the soldier’s hand for the last 30 seconds of his life. The only word from the departing soul was the word ‘mother’ and Harry affirmed he could sense the presence of the soldier’s mother and that of God. On another occasion his unit was attacked by a small group of German soldiers. The Germans were clearly out of ammunition because they could have so easily shot them. Harry drew his pistol as one lunged towards him and he was a dead shot but he remembered the Biblical exhortation ‘Thou shalt not kill’. Harry wounded the German with a bullet to the shoulder but he kept on coming so Harry shot him just above the knee and at the ankle for he would not take the life of the man. Later, Harry was to describe the hell of the trenches, the perpetual mud, the lice in clothing unchanged for months and so on. The BBC became interested in Harry only when he became a centenarian. Prior to that Harry recovered from his wound and completed his plumbing education, helped create the Wills Building, which forms the basic home of the University of Bristol only a few yards from where I live. Many years later he was to return to help with roof repairs and in the meantime had served as a fire warden during the Second World War. For his services to the University it awarded Harry Patch latterly with the honorary degree of Master of Arts. By this time Harry was devoting his energies fighting for recognition for war veterans and it was this effort, his third and final career, which was to lead to his celebrity status. He gave interviews, talked to television commentators and on one remarkable occasion appeared on television talking with 106 years old Charles Kuentz, a German soldier aged 107 years who had also fought at Passchendaele. Kuentz brought a tin of biscuits for Harry and he in return gifted a bottle of Somerset cider to the German. They talked of the senselessness of war, the needless destruction and loss of life. Harry represented the army at 110 years of age at the Cenotaph service on 11th November, 2008 to present their wreath. He was accompanied by Johnson Beharry V.C. who is the only serving member of the U.K. forces with a Victoria Cross. Both he and Harry talk about the nightmares, the flashbacks, the mental health problems created by the trauma of war. Harry, who didn’t smoke, drink alcohol or gamble, touched the heart of millions of people who might otherwise not have understood the sacrifice of the soldier in the trenches in the First World War. His passing was lamented by the Queen and Prime Minister and notably by the Prince of Wales, who realised what a remarkable man Harry was. Harry received no less than eight honours for his military service including the Knight of the Order of Leopold from Albert II, King of the Belgians and in 1999 the coveted Legion D’Honneur from the French Government. At the time of his passing he was the oldest man in the U.K. and in Europe and third oldest man in the world.
THE ASTROLOGY Using midday (time of birth unknown) Harry was born 17th June, 1898, Combe Down, Somerset, England. There is firstly:-5 Planets in youthful Gemini including Sun conjunct Neptune and Mercury conjunct Pluto. This could signify longevity. Mercury and Venus are both parallel to Neptune. Harry was a bit of a poet in his own right and was a ‘gentle-man’ – a compassionate man. Mercury opposes Saturn in Sagittarius and Mars forms a quincunx from Taurus. This configuration might explain the potential for violence in the trenches and perhaps too the fact his brother was considered more intelligent. When the shell exploded at Passchendaele, which injured Harry, it occurred on 22nd September, 1917 at 21-30 UT.Transiting Chiron was retrograding across Harry’s Sun by square which accounts for his injury. Also Transiting Mars was in square to Harry’s Mars and trine his Saturn. Transiting Mercury was in square to Harry’s Neptune signifying the sacrifice he made in his health. Interestingly, too, in the Secondary Progression for Harry’s injury Progressed Chiron’s midpoint with Progressed Saturn was exact to the minute on Progressed Uranus brilliantly illustrating the sudden nature of the wounding and death surrounding him. In the Tertiary Progressions Mercury very closely squares Pluto aptly describing the carnage in the trench around him.At the time of his death Transiting Uranus very closely squares Harry’s Sun and Transiting Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron in Aquarius were in square to Harry’s Chiron in Scorpio and in the Progressions Venus had just conjoined Harry’s Chiron.
