HARMONICS by Roy MacKinnon
astro techniques
With a little practice, astrologers can easily pick out geometrical aspects based on whole signs. So, the square of 90 degrees (3 signs), opposition of 180 degrees (6 signs) or the trine of 120 degrees and sextile of 60 degrees (4 and 2 signs respectively), are easy to pick out. However, there are other important astrological aspects but they are not so easy to detect and so a device is needed to facilitate their detection. The device is called 'Harmonics'. The first aspect not so easily seen is the semi-square of 45 degrees. Let us say you have Saturn at 11 degrees Aries and Sun at 25 degrees Taurus. This is a semi-square of not quite 45 degrees (44 in fact). It is not easily seen. If you multiply all the planet positions in a horoscope by 4- that is, convert to absolute longitude starting at 0 degrees at the beginning of Aries, the clearly Saturn is a 11 degrees but the Sun is at 55 degrees (30 for Aries + 25 for Taurus), multiply these figures by 4 and we get: 11x4=44 degrees for Saturn and 55x4=220 degrees for the Sun. There is only one further step and that is to reconvert absolute longitude back into sign notation. So, 44 degrees becomes Taurus 14 (30 for Aries and 14 for Taurus) and Scorpio 10 degrees for Sun (210 degrees for Scorpio 0 degrees and a further 10 degrees (see midpoint page for a fuller explanation). So now we have Saturn at Taurus 14 and the Sun at Scorpio 10. Note this is an easily recognised opposition - all because we put a microscope on the horoscope and used a magification of 4. Now, if you think about it, a demi-semi-square of 22.5 degrees or half a semi- square will appear in the 4th Harmonic as a square - again easily recognised. So, harmonics is a very useful device. A quintile is an aspect of 72 degrees and very difficult to see from an ordinary chart. However, if you multiply planet positions by 5 (5th harmonic) then a quintile aspect becomes a conjunction (72x5=360) and a semi-quintile of 36 degrees becomes an opposition (36x5=180). In the same way 1/7th of the horoscope (51 and 3/7th of a degree) or a septile aspect can easily be seen by using a Harmonic of 7, which brings such planets together in a conjunction. Likewise, a novile of 40 degrees wil become a conjunction by using a Harmonic magnification of 9. Keywords include 'challenging' for the 4th Harmonic, 'mentally creative' for the 5th H., 'inspired' for the 7th H. and 'inner peace for the 9th H. Read David Hamblin's book on Harmonics for further information. In Harmonic charts use an orb of 16 degrees maximum for a conjunction, 8 for an opposition and 4 for a square or trine. Do not use the 'new' signs interpretively for harmonic charts. Likewise, do not use houses either. Remember that accurate charts are needed. Dubiety over birth time becomes magnified under the lens of the harmonics, particularly with the cardinal points and the Moon. Here is an example. If in the 7th Harmonic chart Mercurury is at 4 degrees of Cancer and Uranus is at 6 degrees of Libra, then you might interpret this as: 'The individual is inspired (7th) to communicate (Mercury) in a refreshing and interesting manner (Uranus) but finds this quite a challenge ( square).
Harmonic Age Numbers by Liz Seddon To follow on from the above Harmonics I have been using Harmonic charts as a predictive tool for some time. Though it's not widely recognised yet, I believe other astrologers are doing the same. I only look at the year ahead, very much like a solar return chart. For instance for someone who is 44 years of age I would look at the 45th H. Calculations are the same as above, thus: 45 x the planet positions, reconvert back into sign notation and interpret. For instance, Gordon Brown, (the British prime minister) was 57 years of age on 20th February 2008. So, for the year ahead I use the 58th H. His 58th H. chart shows a Sun Pluto conjunction with the Midheaven, all three are in opposition to Mars. This indicates that the year ahead is likely to see Gordon involved in intense power struggles with others. His position may be threatened and if so, he is likely to stand firm and deal with his 'attackers' in a 'might makes right' manner, which is not likely to endear him to the public. His situation is not helped by a T-square involving Uranus, Chiron, Venus and Neptune. This configuration suggests that he is single-mindedly working towards a goal but that issues are going on behind the scene of which he is not yet fully aware. These are likely to undermine his position and lead to changes and disruption regarding all that he values.
