EROS by Roy MacKinnon Discovered on 13th August 1898, Eros is a tiny potato shaped asteroid of only 20 miles in length. It orbits within Mars and is classed as a Near Earth Asteroidal object, at times coming very close to Earth. NASA sent a probe to Eros and it landed on Eros on 12th February 2001. Eros has a cratered, stony surface and a somewhat unstable orbit. Astrologically, after the myth, Eros represents in horoscopes where one might develop a passion. While it clearly refers to sexual matters, it is to be noted that Eros can be applied to various life activities. For example, if there is an Eros Jupiter trine the individual may have a passion for travel or for philosophy or religion. In a sense, Eros is like a different aspect of Mars and when contacted by a planet from the horoscope of another person, may act just as Mars might in synastry. As such, Eros by transit could indicate when a relationship might commence although usually a combination of influences is necessary. Challenging aspects can reflect difficulties in fulfilment of what there is a passion for. AMOR Amor wasn't discovered until relatively recently - 12th March 1932 in fact. It gives its name to a series of asteroids which came close to Earth at perihelion, but at aphelion came close to the orbital distance at which Mars is. It is a very small asteroid, only a mile or so in diameter. It was only because at times it approaches Earth that led to its discovery, it being such a faint object in the sky that even by telescope it's not easy to locate. In the mythology, Amor is the Roman god of love - but love in the sense of compassion and loving kindness. Amor is like an intermediary between Venus and Neptune and brings qualities such as selflessness and empathy. Amor in favourable aspect to Saturn could indicate a love of discipline or structure and Amor in aspect to Mercury might suggest a love of communication. In difficult aspects obviously problems might arise in uniting the qualities of the two heavenly bodies. Amor in square to Mars might indicate a reticence in initiating enterprises or in finding courage, or inappropriate expression of anger where a more emphatic input might be appropriate. In synastry, Amor aspects can indicate where there is a natural resonance and easy friendship between people. With these small minor asteroids the orb of influence should be restricted to a maximum of three degrees.
