Eris

Eris (UB313) by Roy MacKinnon The dwarf planet was dicovered on 21st October 2003 by the team of Michael Brown of Caltech Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii and David Rabinowitz of Yale University. The announcement was made sooner than planned to pre-empt discovery acknowledgement going to the team of Jose-Luis Ortiz of the institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia, Granada, who had just claimed discovery dubiously, of another Trans Neptunian Object: 2003 EL61. It soon became clear that UB313 as it was designated was quite large when compared with other Kuiper Belt Objects. Since its size was comparable to Pluto (actually larger than Pluto), it was announced that a 10th planet had been discovered. This, subsequently threw the International Astronomical Union into turmoil and as result of their 'discord' both Pluto and UB313 were downgraded to dwarf planet status. This kind of discord and marginalisation is in fact typical in Eris symbolism. Whilst waiting for official naming of UB313 by the IAU, Brown decided to nick-name the planetoid Xena and its little moon Gabrielle, after the t.v. series: Hercules, The Legendary Journeys, which features Xena. Initially, she is portrayed as a seductive but treacherous warlord and enemy of Hercules. Later episodes show that she renounces evil and evolves into a friend and ally of Hercules, never having beaten him in combat. Then, in her own spin-off series: Xena, The Warrior Princess, she sets off to redeem herself by fighting tyranny and selfishness and by protecting the weak and innocent instead. In her adventures, her accomplish is Gabrielle, a young innocent, unselfish and self-sacrificing scholar, almost the alterego of Xena. To a major extent this theme is the hallmark of the symbolism appropriate to Eris. In Hesiod's Greek mythology he is at pains to point out there are two kinds of 'strife' (Eris). There is Eris who is daughter of Nyx (Night) and the son of Cronus. She encourages mankind to 'strive' and to achieve and be successful. She is kind but the other Eris known as Discordia to the Romans, is daughter of Zeus and Hera. She is a troublemaker, tells lies, loves fighting and warfare and brings bitterness and lawlessness wherever she goes. She is responsible for starting the Trojan Wars. Not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetus because of her troublemaking temperament, she gatecrashed and threw a golden apple, the Apple of Discord, into the crowd announcing it was for 'The Most Beautiful One'. Present were Aphrodite, Athena and Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. The choice was to be made by Paris, Prince of Troy. He chose Aphrodite, thereby dooming Troy, which was destroyed in the battle that ensued. Two other points are worth noting. The first is that the evil Eris had many offspring. One of them Dysnomia is now the name of the moon of Eris. Dysnomia was the goddess of lawlessness. It is interesting to note that it was Lucy Lawless who starred in the Xena series. The other point of note is that Eris is also the name given to a classification of jumping spider. Like other spiders, they are carnivorous but perhaps surprisingly, they also consume nectar. Spiders of course make webs and webs such as the world wide web and anything to do with networking is associated with Eris.
