Endeavour's Final Flight

Endeavour's Final Flight 9th June 2011 photo from NASA

Endeavour was the last orbiter to be built and flew its maiden voyage on 7 May, 1992, 19.40 EDT from Kennedy Space Centre. It is named after the ship commanded by the British explorer James Cook from 1769 to 1771.It made the first American ISS construction flight, delivering the Unity Module and carried out the mission to correct the Hubble Space Telescope's flawed vision. Its radar map of the planet is one of the most used Earth-observation data-sets ever acquiredEndeavour was the youngest member of the fleet, built as a replacement for the Challenger vessel which was destroyed on launch in 1986. Space shuttle Endeavour has brought its 19-year operational career to a close with a textbook landing in Florida. The vehicle swept into a night-time touch-down at the Kennedy Space Center after a successful trip to the International Space Station (ISS). Endeavour's rear wheels touched the runway at Kennedy at 0234 local time (0634 GMT). "Your landing ends a vibrant legacy for this amazing vehicle that will long be remembered. Welcome home, Endeavour," Mission Control radioed to the ship once it had come to a stop.

On completion of this 25th and final mission, it has spent a cumulative 299 days in orbit, travelling more than 197.6 million km (122.8 million miles) in the process. "It's sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy," responded Commander Mark Kelly. The US space agency (Nasa) is retiring its shuttle fleet and Endeavour will now be prepared for public display at a science museum in Los Angeles.Only the Atlantis ship has yet to make a final outing.Nasa is committed to ending its shuttle programme because the vehicles are too costly to maintain. The agency believes a more affordable approach to getting astronauts to the ISS can be achieved by contracting out their transport to private companies. The first of these commercial carriers is expected to enter service sometime in the middle of the decade.

Above is a stunning image and one that is bound to be reproduced over and over again whenever they recall the history of the US space shuttle. The picture was taken by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli as he left the International Space Station in May in a Soyuz capsule to return to Earth. Safety procedures mean the Russian vehicle would never normally be in transit when a shuttle is present. It makes this the first-ever image of an American orbiter docked to the ISS. The timing and subject are also perfect. Endeavour is seen here making her final sortie into orbit, making the last big US assembly item delivery - a $2bn particle physics experiment known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. The seven-tonne machine now sits on top of the platform.

Nasa will now concentrate its efforts and resources on a Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) that can go beyond the space station to destinations such as asteroids. ( By Jonathan Amos Science correspondent, BBC News) On the left is the chart set for the date and time of Endeavour's maiden voyage, 7 May 1992, 19.40 EDT. Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. The first thing of note is Pluto conjunct the ascendant in Scorpio making a t-square with the Sun in Taurus and Saturn conjunct the I/c in Aquarius , the sign of space travel. This is not a very happy combination and I think it is a likely indication of the intensity and hard work in overcoming the dangers and safety issues connected with this shuttle after Challenger's disastrous flight. It is also likely that the people objected to the enormous expense of the project (Moon trine Pluto but square Mercury in Aries).

Uranus, the planet connected with science and space travel is conjunct Neptune in Capricorn and perfectly trine the Sun in Taurus, thereby assuring its succes in being responsible for one of the most used Earth-observation data-sets and pictures ever acquired. It is interesting to note that Mars is in Aries, on the Sun/Saturn midpoint and is an indication of taking responsibility for being the pioneer in this, the first American ISS construction flight.
