Egyptian Uprising

Egyptian Uprising Lis Seddon, 29 January 2011

Report from BBC correspondent John Simpson. Here's a quick recap to bring you up to speed: After five days of protests that have killed more than 50 people, tens of thousands of protesters are still on the streets of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, defying an extended curfew and demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Demonstrators and security personnel have clashed outside the interior ministry and there are reports of casualties. The Egyptian army has warned people not to congregate on the streets but has not intervened so far. The curfew is also being ignored by demonstrators in Alexandria and Suez. There have been reports of police stations being set on fire in other parts of the country, including in Giza and Rafah.Ordinary Egyptians appear to be losing their fear of direct confrontation with the security forces. There have been bloody and drawn out clashes all over Cairo and in some of Egypt's main cities.

They have a long list of grievances and the demands are an explicit challenge to their rulers. "Go, go, Mubarak go" and "the people need to end this regime" shouted the angry crowds around al-Istiqamma mosque in Cairo's Giza Square.Opposition leader Mohammed ElBaradei renews his call for President Mubarak to step down. The nomination of a vice-president and a prime minister is not sufficient, he adds, calling on the army to protect the people. "The Egyptian people will remember who stood by them and who stood by the regime when it falls," he says in a speech. The BBC's world affairs editor, John Simpson, brings this analysis from Cairo. In spite of the turmoil, one or two things are becoming clearer, he says. It looks pretty likely that President Mubarak and his military leaders have been told in no uncertain fashion by the Americans that the Tiananmen Square option - by which the authorities restore order by shooting the protesters down by the hundred - is simply not acceptable here. Mr Mubarak's only hope therefore is to form a government which the demonstrators might accept, hard though that is to imagine. If the new government can't calm the anger in the streets, it's hard to see how President Mubarak can stay in power. It is hard, too, to think that the Americans, who keep Egypt afloat with their money, would want him to. Omar Suleiman, the new vice president, once saved President Mubarak's life in an assassination attempt. Saving him a second time may prove more of a problem. In the past, Mr Mubarak has said he will continue to serve Egypt until his last breath.

The transits of the planets in the heaven aspecting the Egyptian natal chart set for 18 June 1953, 23.30pm GMT. Cairo, 30 N 03' 31 E 15' (from Nick Campion's Book of World Horoscopes), would have been instrumental is this uprising.First of all transiting Pluto has been making an opposition aspect to natal Mars since the beginning of 2009. This is an indication of an ever deepening sense of powerlessness , resentment and anger turned inward and kept under control. However, this anger has been waiting to be ignited.Second, transiting Jupiter and Uranus have both been making a square aspect to the natal Sun. This is an indication that the essence of the people is being repressed and needs freedom of self- expression. It will do so in an increasingly disruptive manner. The more so as Jupiter has moved into Aries and is coming ever closer to square natal Mars, indicating the increased need for self- assertion.

And last but not least, transiting Saturn has been square natal Uranus, which has set off the natal Saturn/Neptune -Uranus/Mercury-Chiron t-square. This is a difficult configuration and is an indication of an idealistic but repressive regime that denies its people a voice. To the point where rebellion and violence is seen as the only way out. Transiting Saturn is also coming to the end of its 29 yr cycle indicating long lasting changes.
