Eddie (The) Kidd Completes London Marathon 6th June 2011
Former daredevil Eddie Kidd has spent the past two months completing what his wife has described as his greatest feat yet - the London Marathon.In his prime Kidd was one of the best stunt riders in the world. He first stunned spectators and fans in December 1979, when he jumped 80ft (24m) across a derelict railway bridge in Essex on a 400cc Yamaha.Kidd's achievements culminated in 1993 when he jumped the Great Wall of China and beat Robbie Knievel, son of Evel Knievel, to the stunt bike world championship.Kidd, Great Briton’s greatest stuntman, was an astonishingly beautiful man, both in his appearance and his remarkable level of skill. If the stunt world ever had its own Elvis, it was Eddie. Even his name couldn’t possibly be more fitting. Eddie Kidd. He was literally a kid, 14 years old, when he began his professional career in England in the mid-1970s, a time when many young people in that country were flamboyantly reinventing themselves with cartoon character names like Sid Vicious and Poly Styrene. And he was, literally, a rock star.
His life changed when he suffered serious head injuries in an accident at a motorcycle rally in Warwickshire in 1996. The crash left him brain damaged with severely restricted co-ordination and speech but over the past seven years Kidd has fought to regain some of the mobility he lost.His disabilities, however, have not diminished his zest for a challenge. He has been walking up to a mile a day since 17 April using a specially-designed walking frame, in aid of the charity Children with Cancer UK. Mr Kidd was doused in champagne by well-wishers when he crossed the finishing line on the Mall at 1830 BST on Monday. Former boxer Michael Watson presented Kidd with his finisher's medal. Watson, who was in a coma for 40 days after a fight with Chris Eubank in 1991, said: "I am so inspired by Eddie. He is a true champion."Mr Kidd's wife Sami said she thought it was his greatest achievement. She said: "It's incredible what he has done. "I'm overwhelmed, it's amazing. "If there's anyone out there that is disabled, or injured or sick, get some inspiration from this and don't give up." "Yesterday he did up to two miles. "He had a bit of a lull at the beginning of the week and we were worried that he wouldn't make it but he's stormed it.During the 50-day marathon, the ex-stuntman was joined at various stages by film star Ray Winston, comics Bobby Davro and Joe Pasquale, and Madness frontman Suggs. Mr Kidd, who spent months training for the event on Brighton seafront, has so far raised more than £72,000.

In 1999 he told The Sunday Herald that the night before the jump he had gone on a massive alcohol and cocaine binge, leaving him groggy when he woke up that morning.
The scaffolding he had asked for, as well as the wall of cardboard boxes which would have broken his fall, were not in place. He decided to go ahead and make the jump anyway. He said … I thought I was invincible … I know I was a prat.” It took him three years just to relearn how to enunciate the word “prat.”At the start of the marathon Mars was on his ascendant and with Jupiter in his 1st house trine his Leo planets, the 'dare devil' was back again. While he was walking transiting Pluto was hovering around 7 degrees of Capricorn, enabling him to access the inner strength and determination needed to succeed. L.S.
