Don Quixote and Dioretsaback to minor planets DON QUIXOTE By Roy MacKinnon Asteroid Don Quixote is a main belt asteroid, which was discovered as recently as 1983. Technically speaking, it is not by definition a damacloid but it has most of the eccentric parameters typical of that class of asteroid. In fact it is a near-Earth asteroid which at perihelion is only at a distance of 1.21 AU. However, like damocloids it has a high eccentricity -0.71- and at aphelion is more distant than Jupiter or Mars at a distance of 7.25 AU. Consequently, it has a relatively long orbital period of some 8.7 years and like damocloids has a substantial angle of 30 degrees inclination to the Sun-Earth orbital plane. It is a small asteroid of some 19 kms in diameter and a rotation period of under 8 hours. The asteroid's name comes from the novel Don Quixote, written by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. It was published in two parts, the first in 1605. In the novel Don Quixote tends to misperceive reality and imagines enemies that are not there. Generally an honourable and chilvarous knight he is easily deceived and duped and is an incurable romantic. Always wanting to correct whatever seemed wrong he ultimately regains sanity and reality. In horoscope analysis he can, in good aspect, symbolise concern for the dis- advantaged or disabled, although one may need to check the reality of the situation. In difficult aspect there can be assumptions, theories and notions based on misperception of reality, which can lead to unwarranted interference, delusions and foolish behaviour. The same principles apply in synastry. DIORETSA Discovere very recently (1999) Dioretsa, while having no tail, does act somewhat like a comet and belongs to a sub-class of asteroids, which orbits the Sun with reverse rotation, moving as it were backwards when in Aries to Pisces, the previous sign. The asteroid may have somehow split off from another called 2000 HE46, which also rotates in a retrograde fashion. Dioretsa (asteroid spelled backwards) has high inclination and comes close to Mars at perihelion - 2.4 AU. However, like a comet it has very high eccentricity (0.99) and its orbital period of 116 years takes the asteroid to a distance similar to Pluto at 45.3 AU. So, it crosses all the outer planets on its way to perihelion. Its inclination too, is high at 160 degrees. In chart analysis first indications are that the name and exceptional orbital parameters have considerable importance. In difficult aspect it may represent learning difficulties and has been mentioned as connected to dyslexia or more mundanely to incompitence and ineptitude. There is some evidence too that Dioretsa may symbolise unexpected turns of fate. In good aspect and reflecting its retrograde nature there is evidence of a maverick quality to the asteroid where free-thinking and independent attitudes are adopted. Qualities that are contrary to social norms may be expressed and sometimes for far-reaching sophisticated reasons (as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto crosser). In synastry, it is too early and unresearched to offer an interpretation as yet. This website was created using MAGIX Website Maker You will need the current version of Adobe Flash Player to view it.
