Derivative housesDERIVATIVE HOUSES by Roy MacKinnon Working with derivative houses can seem a complex business but it becomes easier if certain facts are remembered and procedures followed – and it can be a very useful tool on occasion. So, if done step by step it becomes a less confusing technique and one which can offer extra insight. Firstly, it is important you are aware of what each of the houses symbolise, so firstly ensure you are clear that the 5th House governs children, lover, creativity and so on, and, that the 6th House reflects such matters as small animals, health, service, technical work and so on. Secondly, students frequently make the mistake of forgetting that the first house is just that – the first house not the next house. If brothers and sisters are under consideration which is the 3rd House then as far as the 3rd House is concerned its 1st House is the 3rd House not the 4th House which is the 2nd House. Thirdly, students can become confused by forgetting the reference point. If the focus is on siblings then remember everything requires to be viewed through the lens of the 3rd House, not the 1st House. So, stay focussed on that 3rd House and don’t forget and lapse back to the 1st House. Fourthly, practise deriving houses before trying an application of planets. Take a focus, let us say 3rd House of siblings and become clear what other houses mean to the 3rd House. So, if looking at the 4th House, then remember the focus is on the 3rd House so the 4th House is then the 2nd House to it being the next house in succession – that is the house of siblings’ income, values and money. We all know that the opposite house denotes complementarity and partnership. The opposite house to the 3rd House is the 9th House so the 9th House reflects your brother or sister’s spouse. That is, with respect to the 3rd House of siblings the 9th House in your chart symbolises the 7th House to that of your brother’s – his house of partnership. That is how you derive houses. Just take it step by step. Here is an example. If Venus is in your 11th House and forms a quincunx of 150 degrees to Pluto in the 4th House and a square to Uranus in the 2nd House, then what does this say from your chart about your brother. So, hold on to the 3rd House. Don’t forget it. Firstly, if Pluto is in your 4th House then it is in the house after the house of brothers (3rd House) so it represents his 2nd House of money, possessions, values. Uranus is in your 2nd House immediately before the 3rd House so it must be in the last of your brother’s, that is the 12th House. If Venus is in your 11th House then it must be in his 9th House of travel, philosophy, learning and travel – three houses before Uranus. These aspects are challenging aspects so what could they mean (from your chart). Pluto in his 2nd House suggests the possibility of far reaching changes in how your brother earns his living which necessitates an adjustment (quincunx) to his philosophy (9th House) on money (Venus) occasioned by challenging (square) sudden, unexpected events (Uranus) which were unforeseen and demanded sacrifices (12th House).
