Damocles and Hidalgoback to minor planets DAMOCLES by Roy MacKinnon Damocles is an asteroid with a very eccentric orbit, which is typical of a small but interesting class of asteroids. All damocloids have an aphelion at least as distant as Saturn but at perihelion within Jupiter and frequently close to Mars. Discovered on 18th February 1991, Damocles may possibly the nucleus of a dead comet. With an aphelion of 22.1 it travels out beyond the orbit of Uranus but at perihelion it comes in to 1.58, which is close to Mars - the eccentricity being very high at 0.87. The asteroid has a high inclination of 61.95 degrees, is only about 10 kms in diameter and rotates on its axis in about 10 hours. It takes a remarkable 40.7 years to complete one revolution around the Sun. In Greek mythology, Damocles has an encounter with Dionysius II. Damocles states he wants to taste of Dionysius's wealth and luxury. So, for a day Dionysius allows him to taste of his wealth, surrounding him with every luxury. Then he instructs Damocles to look upwards and there, suspended above his head, hanging by a single strand of hair is a very sharp sword - all set to fall. Damocles immediately develops a taste for his former life and abandons his desire for luxury. In astrology, Damocles reflects this myth and the extreme astronomy, by representing the principle of risk- taking accompanied by stress. It reflects brinkmanship, people forced to defend their principles and revolution (Mars at perihelion, Uranus at aphelion). Well aspected it can reflect where one might reflect a viewpoint. Venus trine Damocles might defiantly defend values. In difficult aspect dangerous risk-taking might be observed. Damocles square Mercury could reflect somebody who is stupidly outspoken, advocating revolution, thereby courting disastrous consequences. In synastry these contacts can be similarly helpful or disastrous, depending on the nature of the aspect. HIDALGO The asteroid Hidalgo was discovered on 31st October 1920. It is a main belt asteroid and like Damocles is highly elliptical in orbit. At perihelion it is 1.95 AU from the Sun. A little more distant than Mars but Hidalgo, at perihelion, travels even further from the Sun than Saturn at 9.54 AU, with a high eccentricity at 0.66 and high inclination of 42.5 degrees. Larger than Damocles, the diameter is some 38 kms and it rotates on its axis in around 10 hours. Its orbital period is 13.8 years. Named after the priest Hidalgo Y Castillo, who instigated the Mexican revolution in 1810, so as to free the Mexican people from the yoke of the Spanish, and who later paid with his life for his unselfish actions. Hidalgo likewise in astrology symbolises situations where defence of principles is determinedly pursued (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). When positively used Hidalgo may indicate the ability to stand up for one's own rights or for the rights and principles of abused minorities. A trine aspect from Hidalgo to Uranus may reflect an individual fiercely determined to stand up for his/her individuality, but in an acceptable way. The same connection but with a square aspect may reflect the disruptive nature of a high risk-taking fanatic or, alternatively, somebody who is incapable of standing up for their individuality, and builds up a smouldering and carping resentment. In synastry, Hidalgo in good aspect between two people may show how one person can help support the other with dedication. Hidalgo trine the Moon of the other person may, for example, show how one can support the feelings or family or responses of the other. However, Hidalgo conjunct or square another person's Neptune may represent a situation where the Hidalgo person is unable to assert his/her self. Their rights are somehow being dissipated or weakened by the Neptune partner. This website was created using MAGIX Website Maker You will need the current version of Adobe Flash Player to view it.
