Chariklomore on Chariklo CHARIKLO by Liz Seddon Chariklo is one of the Centaurs class of outer-system asteroids, whose orbits cross the the orbits of the gas giants. It has an estimated diameter of 300 km, making it one of the largest Centaurs. It was discovered by J.V.Scotti on 15th February 1997 at the Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona, though first observed in 1988. It orbits between Saturn and Uranus and has an orbital period of 62.4 years. In the mythology, Chariklo was the wife of the wise Centaur Chiron. She was not a Centaur but a nymph (minor goddes) and was designated a Centaur status in honour of her relationship with Chiron. She was the daughter of Apollo, the Sun God. There are very few female centaurs, one is Hylonome, the wife of Cyllarus, the other is Okyrhoe, Chiron and Chariklo's daughter. In the myth Chiron was wounded by Hercules's arrow. He suffered a long and agonising death. During that time Chariklo was his nurse, carer, companion and counselor. Philip Sedgewick suggests that she is about the "need for definition between intimacy and personal space" and "seeking definition of human interaction and boundaries" and "a desire to help without co-dependent interference". The discovery of Chariklo as one of a few female centaurs, may have had an influence on women becoming more active in an otherwise male dominated area and vice versa, the men showing their feminine side in an otherwise female world. We only need to take a look at the increase in 'house husbands' over the last few years. In its discovery chart, Chariklo is at 6-02' degrees of Leo in direct opposition with Uranus and Jupiter, which are both at 5-56' of Aquarius. It is also making a grand trine with Saturn at 5-08' of Aries and Pluto at 5-29' Sagittarius. This could indicate that innovative and ground- breaking projects might be initiated by people who are disciplined and determined, and not afraid to take a risk in order to succeed in their chosen field. As Chariklo's orbit is between Saturn and Uranus, so, in the natal chart, it's position in sign and house, could indicate the area in which we need to accept imposed boundaries yet take a risk to express our 'innermost feminine' side. How easy or difficult this will be depends on the aspects it makes to the other points and planets in the chart. The person, who to my mind, is a perfect example of how the energy of Chariklo can be expressed is Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, whose chart you see here. She was a Swiss born psychiatrist and the author of the groundbreaking book 'On Death and Dying'. She was the recipient of twenty honorary degrees and has taught thousands of students on death and dying courses in colleges, seminaries, medical schools, hospitals and social work institutions. Elisabeth was born in Zurich, one of a set of identical triplets. She moved to the U.S. in 1958 to work and continued her studies. As she began her practice, she was appalled by the hospital treatment of patients who were dying. She began giving a series of lectures featuring terminally ill patients, forcing medical students to confront people who were dying. Her extensive work with the dying led to her writing over twenty books on the subject. She also proposed the now famous 'Five Stages of Grief' as a pattern of phases most people tend to go through when confronted with their own impending death. Her natal Chariklo is at 19-57 degrees of Gemini, conjunct the I/C and the Mars/Neptune midpoint ( the energy she put into realising her deep-rooted belief of caring and communicating for and on behalf of those who were dying). who were unable to do so themselves. Other aspects in the chart show how difficult this would have been at times. I.e. the Pluto, Sun, Node square Mars. (intense power issues). Elisabeth, to me, epitomises what Chariklo is about.
