Ceres by Roy MacKinnon Ceres was the first asteroid to be discovered and it is the largest asteroid in the major asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The discovery was made by a Sicilian monk called Guiseppe Piazzi on 1st January 1801. Ceres is smaller than our Moon and in fact is only some 580 miles in diameter but it rotates quite quickly completing one revolution on its axis in some 9 hours. It has a period of revolution around the Sun of 4.6 years and a density of just over 2gms per c.c. Its total mass representing about 25% of the total mass of the major asteroid belt. It appears to have a differentiated core with clay silicates at the centre but a slushy, icy mix of dust and water on the outside. On 27th September 2007, NASA launched a probe which it is hoped will contact both Vesta and Ceres, the former in 2011 and the latter in 2015. The Dawn Mission as it is called, will carry a camera and spectrometer so as to take good photographs and determine the nature of some of the constituent chemical elements of the asteroid. The asteroid's name, Ceres, comes from the Roman God of plants and cereals as used by us to represent the harvest and has a motherly, supportive role in mythology. One of the famous stories is that of Pluto's abduction of Ceres's daughter Persephone and her captivity in the underworld ruled by Pluto. Persephone spends half the year with Pluto and half of the year with her mother Ceres. When she is with her mother, the soil bursts forth with life and ultimately expands and grows until the harvest is reaped at which point she must return to Pluto and Ceres then brings in the barrenness of winter. In astrology, Ceres represents the same theme of nurturance, mothering and expansion as per the myth, so Ceres is like a combination of Moon with a bit of Jupiter attached. Ceres is therefore important in domestic life, animal care, pregnancy, parenting roles and nurturance in general. Aspects to planets have a significance that will depend on whether these are positive and flowing as in the trine or challenging as in the square. If, for example Ceres is trine to Saturn then this aspect indicates the likelihood of stability, longevity and depth in nurturing relationships with strong traditional family values. A square on the other hand from Saturn to Ceres suggests that in childhood one or both parents may have denied nurturing. They may have witheld love and validation from the developing child or demanded certain behaviours or conditions, or simply been too disciplined and harsh. Alternatively, they may have been too responsible, doing everything for the growing child. It sometimes indicates having to look after one's parents in the neediness of old age. Nelson Mandela, with a Sagittarius Ascendant and Ceres conjunct that ascendant in the 1st House, is someone who offered nurturance and support to the indigenous people of South Africa, in their fight for justice and freedom from the yoke and domination of white imperialism
