From the BBC news Baroness Cathy Ashton's selection as Europe's first High Representative For Foreign Affairs caps a remarkable recent rise up the political ladder. Little known in the UK, Baroness Ashton has been handed the job of Europe's first "foreign minister", in which she will represent the EU's 500 million citizens in its dealings with the US, Russia and other world powers. She has expressed "slight surprise" at her elevation to the high-profile role but said she was "deeply privileged" and would pursue a policy of "quiet diplomacy" to advance the EU's interests. She was picked for the role after long-time friend and ally Gordon Brown persuaded oher leaders to throw their weight behind her. The prime minister praised the "brilliant" job that she had done as EU trade commissioner, a job which she has held for just over a year. While her appointment will be seen as underwhelming in some quarters and not the heavyweight figure many hoped for the role, Baroness Ashton is used to shaking off criticism and getting on with the job. She became a life peer in 1999. Was Leader of the House of Lords before becoming EU Trade Commissioner last year. When she was appointed to her current role as EU Trade Commissioner, her credentials were openly questioned - one British MEP claiming that she did not "have the CV" for the job. Succeeding Lord Mandelson in that important role was always likely to be difficult, not least because critics said she had only been parachuted into the job to enable him to return to front-line British politics. But Baroness Ashton is widely regarded to have proved a success, showing quiet efficiency and an ability to build consensus on key issues. In the role, she has led trade negotiations with China and other key powers, arguing the case for free trade in the face of the worst recession in EU history and amid creeping protectionism around the world. Before being surprisingly dispatched to Brussels, she held a number of ministerial posts, steadily rising through the Labour ranks. Starting off as junior minister in the Department of Education, she was given responsibility for Labour's flagship education project Sure Start between 2002 and 2004. She then switched to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs in 2004, being voted politician of the year in 2006 by gay rights group Stonewall for championing equality and human rights. Mr Brown quickly promoted her to become Leader of the Lords when he became prime minister in 2007. In that post, she played an important role in steering the EU Lisbon Treaty, the controversial piece of legislation under which the new post of foreign affairs chief was created, through the upper chamber. Before entering Parliament, Baroness Ashton enjoyed a varied career, starting off in an administrative role at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in the late 1970s. With a degree in economics from the University of London, she made her way in business, working first as a management consultant and then for the
