Bhopal verdict

Bhopal Verdict Lls Seddon 7 june 2010

There has been protest and direct action. It's 45 days since the disaster on the Deepwater Horizon rig and the oil spill still isn't fixed, but just how angry are Americans at BP?There's been blanket coverage on American rolling news stations. Every national politician in the US has the spill at or near the top of his or her agenda. And BP itself is already fighting a PR war to try to minimise the damage to its reputation from the oil starting to ravage the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. If Facebook groups are a good indicator of rage, then the US is very angry indeed. The group dedicated to "Boycott BP" is gaining over 30,000 members every day and is already around the 350,000 mark. No one is suggesting that the oil spill is not a tragic accident. The loss of lives and heartbreaking images we see on our tv screens only serve to increase the anger directed at BP over its handling of the crisis. President Obama has called it the 'biggest environmental catastrophe in US history. He furiously accused BP of 'imperilling an entire way of life and an entire region for potentially years'. He suggested it is ignoring the fishermen who have depended on schrimp for their livelihood. These Comments from the Mail on Sunday. He has continually referred to the company as 'British Petroleum', despite it being a multinational company which changed its name to BP10 years ago. This does little to bolster the fading 'special relationship' between the US and Britain. Local politicians have stepped up the war of words too. But while BP has paid out $1 billion to date, which includes £40.2 million in payments to fishermen and other workers for loss of earnings, it seems that there are a number who are quoting sums far and above what they would normally earn.

Investigations raise worrying questions about the extent of the spill and the validity of the compensation claims. A terrible accident should not provide the pretext for extortion, whether by ambulance-chasing lawyers or vote-chasing presidents. Perhaps it is here we need to remind the US of the Bhopal disaster, which was called: 'the world's worst chemical leak'. 25 years later people are still suffering ill health and babies are still born with deformities. BP Chief executive Tony Hayward has promised to stay in the Gulf of Mexico until all the oil is cleaned up. It is well to remember here too that a lot of people depend for their pension on BP and not just in Britain either. Let us take a look at the US chart and the aspects the transiting planets are making at the moment. Pluto is retrograde and opposite the Venus/Jupiter midpoint. This is the likely indicator of the financial losses the US has been faced with lately but it could loose more than that. It could provoke anger among its 'partners' and loose its standing in the world if it is not seen to be conducting itself fairly, mindful of others values. Neptune is conjunct the Moon and could be interpreted as an inability to see the world and their role in it not for what it is, but rather for what they imagine it to be.

From the BBC news A court in the Indian city of Bhopal has sentenced eight people to two years each in jail over a gas plant leak that killed thousands of people in 1984. The convictions are the first since the disaster at the Union Carbide plant - the world's worst industrial accident. The eight Indians, all former plant employees, were convicted of "death by negligence". One had already died - the others are expected to appeal. Campaigners said the court verdict was "too little and too late". (see also Bhopal gas leak) Forty tonnes of a toxin called methyl isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory and settled over slums in Bhopal on 3 December 1984. The Indian government says some 3,500 people died within days and more than 15,000 in the years since. Campaigners put the death toll as high as 25,000 and say the horrific effects of the gas continue to this day. The seven former employees, some of whom are now in their 70s, were also ordered to pay fines of 100,000 Indian rupees (£1,467; $2,125) apiece. However, in 1996 India's Supreme Court reduced the charges to "death by negligence", carrying a maximum sentence of up to two years in prison if convicted. Campaigners say Bhopal has an unusually high incidence of children with birth defects and growth deficiency, as well as cancers, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. These are seen not only among survivors of the gas leak but among people born many years later, they say. Twenty years ago Union Carbide paid $470m (£282m) in compensation to the Indian government. Dow Chemicals, which bought the company in 1999, says this settlement resolved all existing and future claims against the company. Campaigners would like to see the former Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson, the prime accused in the case, brought to justice. A warrant for his arrest was issued by an Indian court in 2003 but never acted on. Campaigners say at least 15,000 were killed within days and that the effects of the gas continue to this day. The site of the former pesticide plant is now abandoned. The state government of Madhya Pradesh took it over in 1998, but environmentalists say poison is still found there. Initial deaths (3-6 December): more than 3,000 - official toll Unofficial initial toll: 7,000-8,000 Total deaths to date: over 15,000 Number affected: Nearly 600,000 Compensation: Union Carbide pays $470m in 1989 Source: Indian Supreme Court, Madhya Pradesh government, Indian Council of Medical Research
