AspectsAstrological Aspects by Liz Seddon When the planets in the horoscope are linked together by certain mathematical degrees, we call them ASPECTS. The circle of the horoscope is 360 degrees in circumference. Aspects are made by dividing the circle. If you divide the circle of 360 by two you get 180 degrees. These are the brown lines on the diagram and are called oppositions. There is a need to integrate the two planets' energy and can be quite difficult if the planets in question are not well matched. For instance, Saturn on one end opposite the Moon on the other could create difficulties in the emotional/ home life as Saturn is restriction and the Moon is emotions. Usually, we identify more with one planet than the other. If you divide the circle of 360 by three you get 120 degrees, which are the blue lines forming a triangle on the diagram. These are called trines and are flowing aspects and as such can be helpful to the person but they do not make for productive growth as no effort is required. For instance, if you have Jupiter trine Mercury, learning and communicating may come easy to you. If you divide the circle of 360 by four you get 90 degrees. These are the red lines on the diagram and are called squares. These are difficult aspects because the signs in question tend to be incompatible. They make us aware of obstacles that need to be overcome. For instance, if Uranus squares the Sun we are likely to be made aware that the unique manner in which we express ourselves may be seen as disruptive by others and teach us to modify our behaviour in order to be accepted. However, the positive side to these squares is that they encourage growth if we are prepared to take on board their message. If you divide the circle of 360 by six you get 60 degrees. These are the green lines in the diagram and are called sextiles. These are considered easy aspect as the signs in which they fall are generally compatible. So, Mars sextile Saturn may find it easy to put out energy in a disciplined manner. There are two other aspects that can be problematic. The first one is called a quincunx, which means two planets are about 150 degrees apart and generally means that the energy of one planet is sacrificed as it's difficult to access both at once. For instance, Mars quincunx Neptune could mean that you are either assertive or laid back, at different times. The second one is called a semi-sextile and is so called as it is half of a sextile aspect, so two planets 30 degrees apart. This can be difficult on two counts, e.g. the signs are not compatible and one planet is hidden behind the other giving it a 12th House effect of sacrifice or not being aware. For instance, Sun semi-sextile Pluto could mean that the solar energy is held in or sacrificed to a certain extent. A conjunction is when two or more planets are occu- pying the same position (within 8 degrees) in the horoscope and can be easy or difficult, depending on the planets. The Orbs are the distance allowed between the planets in the above aspects. For oppositions, squares and trines, the orb allowed is 8 degrees. This means that planets aspecting one to the other can be 172-188 degrees apart for an opposition, 112-128 degrees apart for a trine and 82-98 degrees for a square aspect. For the other two the orb should be much smaller, so 148-152 degrees for the quincunx, 28-32 degrees for the semi-sextile. back to basic astrology This website was created using MAGIX Website Maker You will need the current version of Adobe Flash Player to view it.
