Asbolus

back to minor planets ASBOLUS by Liz Seddon Asbolus (his name means soot) is a Centaur, that is, an icy asteroid that orbits between Jupiter and Neptune. It was discovered by James V. Scotti and Robert Jedicke of Spacewatch, at Kitt Peak Observatory on 5th April 1995. It's orbit around the Sun lies between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune. Its perihelion is 6.83 AU and at aphelion it goes out to 29.11 AU. It is believed to be 664 kms in diameter and has a rotational period of 76.3 years. It was discovered when it was at 8 degrees at Libra. In the mythology, Asbolus was a seer, with a reputation for accurately predicting the future. He read the omens in the flight of birds. He foresaw the Centaurs' battle against the Lapiths at the wedding of Pirithous to Hippodamia and tried in vain to stop them from fighting. This was the event at which Hercules ordered Pholus to open the jar of wine that had been kept there for generations awaiting his arrival and at which many of the intoxicated centaurs met their deaths. Asbolus also died there. It it said he was crucified by Hercules's arrows for leading the Centaurs to Pholus's cave after they smelled the wine. In astrology, the centaurs partake of the energy of the planets they orbit. Asbolus orbits between Jupiter and Neptune, both rulers of Pisces. Jupiter is about expansion of all kinds such as; religion and philosophy, over-reaching the self and arrogance. Neptune's influence is about compassion and altruism, deception and denial. As rulers of Pisces both bodies have an other-worldly connection and anyone with a strong Jupiter/Neptune/Pisces influence in the chart could be predisposed to these influences. It follows then that the position of Asbolus in the chart could indicate where we are likely to be open to influences from 'another world'. These could be dark influences as the name 'Soot' implies. The fact that it was discovered at about 8 degrees of Libra might indicate that it is particularly strong in connection with another person. As Asbolus is still a relatively new body, not a lot of research has been done on it yet. How the energy manifests in a horoscope would depend on the aspects from natal Asbolus to other planets and points in the chart. It could indicate where a person has the ability to get in touch with their intuitive side for the benefit of others (Jupiter/Neptune/Libra), but not until they have confronted and acknowledged their own 'dark' side. The dark side of the Jupiter/Neptune influence could manifest as an overactive imagination to the point of deception, believing one's inner voice to be the 'truth' and to convince oneself of one's own importance to the point of being arrogant. It may be significant in synastry in that deception is likely if one of the partners Asbolus is making difficult aspects to the other and perhaps makes for an intuitive bond when well aspected. I have knowledge of a couple who have a Sun/Moon conjunction at 7.50 degrees of Cancer. One of them has Asbolus at 7 degrees Cancer natally. They got divorced in April 1995, just when Asbolus was discovered at 7.46 degrees of Libra, making a square aspect to that Sun/Moon/Asbolus conjunction. There had been a lot of obvious deception leading up to the divorce, yet the perpetrator could or would not be convinced of it.
