Anna Hazare

Kisan Baburao (Anna) Hazare 17 August 2011

Kisan Baburao Hazare, born 15 June 1937, popularly known as Anna Hazare is an Indian social activist who is especially recognised for the Indian Movement against corruption and his contribution to the development and structuring of Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan—the third-highest civilian award—by the government of India in 1992 for his efforts in establishing Ralegan Siddhi as a model village.Anna Hazare started a fast unto death on 5 April 2011 to exert pressure on the government of India to enact a strong anti-corruption act as envisaged in the Jan Lokpal Bill, a law to establish a Lokpal (ombudsman) with the power to deal with corruption in public offices. The fast led to nationwide protests in support of Hazare. The fast ended on 9 April 2011, the day after all of Hazare's demands were agreed by the government of India.

These are Mr Hazare's supporters, angered at the government's move to send him to prison and determined to persuade the authorities to release him. "Isn't it ironic that the man who is fighting corruption is put in the same prison as those very corrupt officials he is trying to bring to justice," one elderly man said. Several others around him nodded in agreement. "We will stay here as long as it takes," another man who was standing next to him stays. "As long as it takes for the government to let him go."In Anna Hazare's chart (inner wheel), we can see an indication of his inclination to be a social activist and to voice his idealistic notions by his Mercury-Uranus conjunction in Taurus trine Neptune in Virgo. His natal t-square of Pluto-Venus-Jupiter suggests an obsession with money, probably connected to his poor background. But with Mars trine Pluto he has gone a step further and used this energy to uncover the corruption within the various government bodies. His Sun squares Neptune and indicates the self-sacrifice and denial by fasting, in order to draw attention to his cause. The outer wheel is the chart for India, set for 26 Jan 1950, 10.15am INT. Dehli. (From: Nick Campion's 'The Book of World Horoscopes'. What is interesting in this chart is that a similar energy can be found to connect to Hazare's chart.

For instance: Jupiter-Venus conjunction in Aquarius but opposite Pluto in Leo, indicating possible wealth but also corruption. That this energy has been able to flow freely is shown by the Sun-Jupiter-Venus conjunction trine Mars (the ascendant ruler) and Neptune and back to Pluto ( a wedge) sextile Chiron (another wedge). This has been at the expense of the people and their worth as indicated by the Aquarius stellium square the Moon in Taurus and in the 2nd house. Mercury is square Neptune but trine Saturn and suggests the authorities ability to get away with covering up. But transiting Pluto has been conjunct the M/C, trine the Moon and at the same time tr Uranus is conjunct the ascendant, bringing change and transformation and increased power to the people. L.S.

Kisan's father, Baburao Hazare, worked as an unskilled labourer in Ayurveda Ashram Pharmacy. Kisan's grandfather was working for the army in Bhingar, when he was born. The grandfather died in 1945, but Baburao continued to stay at Bhingar. In 1952, Baburao resigned from his job and returned to his own village, Ralegan Siddhi. Kisan had six younger siblings and the family faced significant hardships. Kisan's childless aunt offered to look after him and his education, and took him to Mumbai. Kisan studied up to the seventh standard in Mumbai and then sought employment, due to the economic situation in his household. He started selling flowers at Dadar to support his family. He soon started his own shop and brought two of his brothers to Bombay.Hazare is well-known as a social activist in his home state of Maharashtra, where he turned his village of Ralegan Siddhi into an environmental prototype. Mr Hazare managed to motivate the villagers to build dams and percolation tanks, to conserve water and to plant thousands of trees. In less than a decade, Ralegan Siddhi had become a sustainable community so successful the state government officially adopted the Ralegan Siddhi model and replicated it in villages across Maharashtra. But as part of the struggle to change his village's environmental outlook, Mr Hazare also sought social transformation. He campaigned against alcohol and tobacco and for literacy. He fought against regressive customs, such as dowry and ostentatious weddings and confronted entrenched caste attitudes. It is this work that brought him national and international recognition by way of awards and gave him the credibility to pursue his campaign against corruption.Delhi's Tihar Jail is a high security facility in which you will find drugs lords, militants and other prisoners including - over the past year - top government officials accused of corruption. Its latest inmate is Anna Hazare - the anti-corruption crusader with a Gandhi-like zeal who is thoroughly embarrassing the government.Outside the prison's high walls, the narrow lanes are choked with people. Hundreds of them have taken up every available space, chanting, singing and waving giant Indian flags.
