100 years Bristol Aerospace

Aviation enthusiasts in the West are celebrating 100 years of flying history in Bristol. (from Wikepedia) Aircraft production began in Filton in 1910, less than two years after the first recorded flight of a powered aeroplane in British skies. The Boxkite biplane was a big success for the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company (BCAC) - BCAC was renamed the Bristol Aeroplane Company in 1920.The factory at Filton was the largest in Europe by the start of World War II.In April 2003, British Airways and Air France jointly announced the retirement of their Concorde fleets. The supersonic airliner has a long association with Bristol, being designed and assembled both at Filton and in France. On 26 November 2003, the Bristol Aero Collection and Airbus UK were lucky enough to receive the last Concorde built, when G-BOAF landed at Filton for preservation. This was also the last ever flight by Concorde.

100 Years of Bristol Aviation by Lis Seddon 19 Feb. 2010

A century of aerospace design, engineering and manufacturing in the West of England will be marked with a special flight from Bristol International Airport to Bristol Filton Airport. The plane will fly at low altitude across the city.Once the plane has landed in Filton, there will be a number of speeches detailing the history of aviation in Bristol since 1910 - the script is being produced by Airbus and will include actors wearing Edwardian dress. The anniversary flight will then return to Bristol International Airport and is due to land at around 12.40pm.The event launches a year of celebrations to honour the spirit and innovation of the founder of the Bristol Aeroplane Company Sir George White. The Bristol Aeroplane Company, originally British and Colonial Aeroplane Company, was a major British aviation company. In 1956 its major operations were split into Bristol Aircraft and Bristol Aero Engines.

Sir George White, Bart. (1854 – 1916) was an English businessman and stockbroker based in Bristol. He was instrumental in the construction of the Bristol tramways. In 1910 he formed, with his brother Samuel, the Bristol Aeroplane Company. He had many other interests, particularly in transport companies. White became interested in heavier-than-air flight, and in 1909 saw Wilbur Wright flying in France. In 1910 he founded the Bristol Aeroplane Company, which set out from the first to produce aircraft on a commercial scale. On the right are the two charts of george White ( outer wheel) and the BCAC (inner wheel). As no actual time is known I don't have the Ascendants. What was it about George White that stimulated his interest in all forms of transport? Looking at his chart this may not seem obvious at first. He has a T-Square with Mars/Saturn/Venus. This indicates an individual who could be prone to angry outbursts yet able to use this energy for whatever he chose to do. This could be in any field where action may be required. However, a closer look reveals a number of midpoints that indicate a pioneering spirit expressed as (Sun-Aries) a love for all things new and different (on Venus/Uranus midpoint). His vision or dream to bring these projects to fruition can be seen by the midpoint of Mercury/Venus conjunct Neptune in Pisces. In the synastry chart it is immediately obvious that White's T-square is connected into the the BCAC's Sun and Chiron in Aquarius, the sign of air travel. Its ruler Uranus at 23 degrees Capricorn conjunct White's Jupiter at 24 degrees Capricorn ( the expansion of the air company). In the BCAC chart Mercury is at 3 degrees of Aquarius perfectly trine the Moon's Node in Gemini, where White's Node can also be found ( the aviation connection between the two).

In 1959 Bristol Aircraft merged with several major British aircraft companies to form the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), and Bristol Aero Engines merged with Armstrong Siddeley to form Bristol Siddeley.BAC went on to become a founding component of the nationalised British Aerospace, now BAE Systems. Bristol Siddeley was purchased by Rolls-Royce in 1966, who continued to develop and market Bristol-designed engines. The BAC works were in Filton, about 4 miles north of Bristol city centre. BAE Systems still operate from Filton.
